I for one am glad we’re finally recognizing that 175 years ago a small percentage of the US elites actually used people of color as slaves and we ended that practice.

It’s hardly ever brought up.

Not a fan of two African-American federal holidays. One seemed enough(there are way more HIspanics in this country and they don't have any).

But he phrase "made up holidays" always seemed dopey and ditzy. What holidays aren't made up?

They have a whole month and MLK Day, why don't they celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation?

I am glad the slaves were freed and we have a day honoring that.

Do I think that most of the lore and current sentiments regarding the day reflect the truth or that it’s meant to be a unifying thing?

AbsoFkinglutely not.

That's how I feel. Actually a pretty significant day the short history of America. There are several BS holidays, at least this one has legs

Donaldsonville has been publicly celebrating going on 31 years

Always remembered seeing the flyers and stuff for the big celebration there as a kid. Tripped me up the last few years when people were calling it "made up" and stuff. Making it a federal holiday was Biden pandering, but it's been a thing for forever.

TBF, almost every holiday except for arguably New Years Day is a made up holiday. I mean, even look at Christmas- even if you believe that Jesus is God, where's the proof that he was really born on December 25?

Still, Juneteenth has an annoying woke element to it that other made up holidays don't have.

My issue isn't really the day off, but the timing. Juneteenth has no national significance. It's a Texas holiday. There are 3 dates that would have been better based on the actual history of our country. .

First is January 1, 1863, when the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. It’s already one of the most recognizable milestones in the end of slavery and would have naturally fit the idea of “Emancipation Day” without needing to create a brand new holiday on the calendar.

Second is December 6, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified and slavery was officially abolished nationwide. That’s the clearest legal endpoint and the strongest argument for a national commemoration.

Third is April 9, 1865, the surrender at Appomattox Court House, which marks the effective end of the Civil War and the point where enforcement of emancipation became reality across the South.

All three of those dates have broader national significance than Juneteenth, and any of them would have made more sense as the foundation for a federal holiday—especially without adding another holiday clustered so close to Memorial Day and Independence Day.

Juneteenth is the day that the last of the slaves were freed.

See, Texas slaveowners just decided that they weren't going to tell their slaves that they were free now. I mean, if they don't know they're free then they'll keep on laboring for free like they always have.

Make sense, really. Even if it's one of the most deplorable things anybody has ever done.

Juneteenth is the day that the slaves were told by outsiders that they were no longer enslaved to another human being.

The date makes sense because it is when the institution of slavery was completely abolished in the US.

Your description is just the Texas-specific reality of it. It's true that Juneteenth is about the last major group of enslaved people finally being told they were free. But it still doesn't mean it's nationally significant in the way as December 6 or January 1 are. Those are the actual NATIONAL turning points. One declared the end of and one legally ended slavery across the United States when Georgia ratified the 13 amendment give the amendment the required 75% agreement of the states. Juneteenth is about a communication lag in one region of one state, not the national end of slavery.

ETA: The reason Juneteenth was chosen as a holiday is because the politicians that pushed it didn't know the real history of our country. The democrats couldn't give Lincoln, a republican, credit for freeing the slaves. The rest of the narrative is a bill of goods to have folks accept the date/holiday.

They had to make a holiday in place of Father's Day for a large amount of the population somehow.
