Asking for a hard-working American taxpayer.

The day the Repub's freed the slaves?

I’m a hard working American and have the day off.
Never understood why people get so butthurt when people get the day off.

Unfortunate for the OP, McDonald's doesn't give the day off

Meh let them have their day

It’s funny in SC, people are complaining about early voting for runoffs being truncated due to the holiday…

Less traffic for my commute, I’ll take it.

My issue isn't really the day off, but the timing. Juneteenth has no national significance. It's a Texas holiday. There are 3 dates that would have been better based on the actual history of our country. .
First is January 1, 1863, when the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. It’s already one of the most recognizable milestones in the end of slavery and would have naturally fit the idea of “Emancipation Day” without needing to create a brand new holiday on the calendar.
Second is December 6, 1865, when the 13th Amendment was ratified and slavery was officially abolished nationwide. That’s the clearest legal endpoint and the strongest argument for a national commemoration.
Third is April 9, 1865, the surrender at Appomattox Court House, which marks the effective end of the Civil War and the point where enforcement of emancipation became reality across the South.
All three of those dates have broader national significance than Juneteenth, and any of them would have made more sense as the foundation for a federal holiday—especially without adding another holiday clustered so close to Memorial Day and Independence Day.

My boss was texting me this morning and I sent back "sorry Juneteenth today cant work." Cant be calling today a holiday and charging everyone holiday PTO and then start calling about non emergency shite.
Bout to start smoking some ribs. Juneteenth and father's day on the same weekend = old school dad mode for this dude. Gonna drink beer in the kiddie pool, cook outside, fish off of a bucket, and watch my wife catch hell with the kids while I do not a damned thing productive cause I been at work all week.
Eta: might even go meet the boys at the local saloon and blow a few days pay getting day drunk and shooting pool and come home 3 hours later than I said I would completely ungovernable. Hopefully I can persuade them to join me in playing 1980 dad this weekend.

I grew up in Texas and studied it in the 80s in Texas History classes in middle and high school.
It really has no national significance. But panderers gonna pander

I’m as lily white as one can be, but I took a personal day today. Does this make me guilty of cultural appropriation?

Yes, and everyday the news is filled with more and more stories like this..

So what the hell are we supposed to be celebrating?

They’re all made up.
I do think more federal holidays should be on a Friday instead of a Monday though.

I would tend to concur. However, being fiscally conservated (as well as just plain conservative), I would have picked Jan 1 to do this. No new federal holiday and it accomplished the same purpose.
Also it doesn't add a new holiday halfway between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
