but they should absolutely not be allowed to have access to EBRPSS Magnet schools

Why not? They PAY for those schools.
Ricky Babin has been DA for almost 20 years. Might be time for a change.
This map says otherwise.

quote:

This is all a bunch of whining from people who happen to live in St. George but their kids get to go to Mayfair or BRH. They very people pacified to vote against STG because they were the few that got the best of both worlds while everyone else footed the bill.

Exactly. Maybe I’d feel differently if my child was accepted into the magnet program & I got to pocket the $10k I spend a year on tuition.

Speaking of, the second the magnet application started asking about free/reduced lunch I knew our chances were gone.
And while we’re digging into EBRPSS…

•28% of the EBRPSS budget is now being transferred to Charter schools, accounting for $194m. This is an increase of 5.4%

•The EBRPSS has a total of 9 schools that are permanently closing or being consolidated due to the lack of enrollment. These closures & consolidations are saving EBRPSS $129 million.

•More than 30 schools are housed in buildings that are 50-85 years old and have not undergone major renovations.

•About 22% of active schools are rated as being in poor condition.

The district has 20,000 more seats open than students even after closing 9 schools.

•Nearly 1/3rd of schools are operating at less than half of their capacity.

EBRPSS has 83 total sites (56 direct-run, 13 charter, 11 magnet, & 3 alternative). The system was built to accommodate 60,000 students however current enrollment sits at 38,244. Based on these numbers, it would only require 55-60 schools to house that number of students. This would save the district $16 million in annual operating expenses and avoid more than $365 million in long term maintenance costs.

• There are 26 schools with less than 300 students. Small enrollment often leads to higher per-pupil costs.

• Students residing in St. George account for 13.6% of the EBRPSS student population yet take 36% of the magnet seats. If you’re in EBR, wouldn’t you want to vote YES and take back your precious magnet seats?

And how many unnecessary jobs tied to the schools system already receiving 6 figures have recently received raises? You can start with all that bullshite

Glad you asked.

From 2021 to present:

•Administrator pay has rose 17.2% while teacher pay has only rose 5%, much of that from state mandated raises rather than local district-funded increases. Specific roles like directors and coordinators rose 20%.

•The average budget allocation for admins is 2.3 times higher than the allocation for a classroom teacher. Total annual expenditures for admins grew 12.8%.

•The admin to teacher ratio is 1:14 meanwhile the teacher to student ratio is 1:19.

• In the last decade Admin positions have increased 14.7% while teaching positions have decreased 13.3%.

•When adjusting for the number of employees in each group (teachers- 2,936, school admin- 208, district admin- 250), the per employee allocation is $88,274 for teachers, $201,754 for school admins & $92,765 for district admins.

•School & district level admins account for 9.5% of every dollar spent.

• Allocations for teachers have dropped 3.5% while allocations for admins has increased 1%

Yes, absolutely agree.

This specific map was chosen to give Cleo a seat and kick Graves out. Marching orders from Jeff.

There were other options presented where a 2nd minority district was created and didn’t involve piecing parts of the state together.

This is the one that made the most sense to me.

Some of the other options that were on the table. Ironically enough, I think Cleo Fields map was the best.

I felt like this was obvious. The LA legislature picked the worst map as there were far better options for the 2nd district.

I do believe Louisiana has enough minority residents to justify a 2nd district, but it has to make sense geographically and culturally. Baton Rouge, Lafayette & Shreveport have no business being in a congressional district together.

Lee’s grandmother told police she had taken him to the mall and picked him up around 1:30 p.m. When investigators showed her a picture of a gunman pointing his weapon behind him as he ran, she acknowledged that it was a photo of Lee, the warrant said.

Grandma had more to do with this than what they’re leading on. It sounds like a deal was made in exchange for identifying him.
quote:

So, how much of a stretch is it to assume that the Courtney Scott running this fraudulent program is related to the grandmother also named Scott?

Interesting. Let me get to digging.

Courtney Scott did sign off on the contract with a company by the name of AGILE solutions that headed the BR Community Street Team. The owner of AGILE is the director of the BR Community Street Team.
A good woman is a good woman, the way I see it.

I wouldn’t write someone off immediately if they were widowed, divorced, or a single mom. Life happens.
But wait there’s more…

Markel Lee mentioned in NYT article

quote:

Baton Rouge became the first city outside New Jersey to be tutored in the Newark method. The mayor’s office started an effort to mimic Newark’s public safety ecosystem, overseen by Courtney Scott, then a mayoral aide.

Under indictment

quote:

The team’s high-risk interventionists are the first responders to shooting scenes and heated disputes

quote:

One of the group’s elders is Gerald Haynes, 51, whom everyone calls Face for the jagged scar that runs from his left ear to his throat. Mr. Haynes spent 27 years in prison for his role in a drive-by shooting, an attempt at retribution for the killing of a friend.

Quite the mentor, I guess.

quote:

Khoury Brown, 32, another high-risk interventionist, is best known to many of the young people the street team works with as the rapper Geaux Yella, with 129,000 Instagram followers. His skill with words is central to his job, but sometimes when a fight is brewing, he fears words will fail him.

A rapper mentor…just what these kids need.

quote:

One of the street team’s initiatives is a mentorship program, in which young people at risk of violence are paired with mentors like Darius Crockett. Mr. Crockett had drifted to the streets as a teenager in Baton Rouge, selling drugs. But he had since gotten his G.E.D. and found work as a welder. He was assigned to work with a 15-year-old named Markel.

quote:

Shootings happen frequently on Markel’s street. His mother, Kayla Atkins, uses a wheelchair, having been paralyzed by a gunshot long ago. From a young age, Markel had to be a caregiver. As he entered his teens, he was getting into fights. When he was 14, one of his best friends was shot and killed. His mother said she desperately wanted to save her son “from going down that path.”

quote:

The mentorship program required Markel to complete three goals. Knowing Markel wanted to rap, Mr. Crockett urged him to enter a talent contest, where he performed an original rap song. Markel took first place, which meant he not only accomplished his first goal, but won prizes that would satisfy his other two: He would be a featured performer in a video with Geaux Yella himself and participate in a recording session. Markel eagerly looked forward to the coming winter when the session would happen. Mr. Crockett also helped the boy land a job at a city-run summer camp.

quote:

Then, in June, Markel got into an argument with his sister. He had a “meltdown,” slamming doors and throwing things, Ms. Atkins said. Feeling helpless to control him, she called the police — and Mr. Crockett. The police officer put Markel in handcuffs in the back of his cruiser.

Moms was trying to help I guess

quote:

As 2023 came to a close, the street team faced new troubles. In early December, Mr. Crockett, the street team member who had mentored Markel, was charged with aggravated battery, domestic abuse and child endangerment. His girlfriend told the police that he had slammed her head against a wall and thrown a steam iron at her while children were sleeping in the next room.

Hmm maybe not the best mentor after all.

BRCST, In partnership with Mayor Sharon Weston Broome's initiative, Safe Hopeful Healthy BR, draws upon an evidence-based, trauma informed approach to violence reduction that has been implemented in several cities across the country.

Hmmm…sounds familiar

2 with ties to BR’s ‘Safe Hopeful Healthy’ program charged in AG’s public corruption probe

Ahh yes

quote:

The panel named Courtney Scott in nine counts and also brought eight charges against Veronica Mathis, whose company provided assistance to Broome's "Safe Hopeful Healthy Baton Rouge" program. Scott oversaw Broome's "Healthy City" initiative, which benefited from the use of federal COVID-19 relief funds.

quote:

Scott and Mathis each face allegations including conspiracy, theft, bribery, money laundering and public contract fraud, while Scott is also accused of malfeasance as a government employee.

quote:

The Safe Hopeful Healthy Baton Rouge initiative was behind Broome's "Summer of Hope" events in 2024. The program was intended to reduce violence in the city. The Advocate newspaper reported Wednesday that Mathis’ company received city-parish funds totaling more than $50,000 between 2020 and 2024.

Sid Edwards took office in January 2025. In May 2025, Markel Lee was already in Juvenile Detention.

The math is not mathing here.

There is a long article with photos about her and her anti-cop philosophy in New Orleans Verite from a couple years ago.

Just looked this up. LINK

I believe this intersection has gotten much better traffic wise since the Pecue exit opened.
Two things:

1. I’m tired of people claiming our schools are underfunded. They are not. They are highly mismanaged. Administrative positions have increased while teacher positions have decreased. Admin pay has risen 17% in EBR while teacher pay has risen 5%. If the schools are so underfunded, how is this possible? A third of my property tax bill goes to EBRPSS.

2. Programs, MORE PROGRAMS. This is all a sham. This young Markel Lee WAS in a program and look where that got him. Some wannabe music producer got some government contract and got rich off “mentoring” the youths. These mentorship & programs all these mouth pieces talk about are just kickbacks and a way for friends and family to get rich. Don’t believe me? Go check out the capital outlay bill and see how many organizations and churches are getting state money.

The amount of minor side streets that get a dedicated light in this city is just absurd.

Burbank at Pelican Lakes says hello.
Yes, a roundabout at Mission St. that connects 73 to Bluff. The light at CBraud will be removed.

In another project, 621 is being realigned further away from the interstate. There will be roundabout on the new 621. Someone posted the map on the previous page.

Also a proposed roundabout at 73/74 & 73/30. And a new interchange at Cornerview.
Check out the Capital Outlay bill. That’s where legislators add in their special pet projects including their kick backs to churches, organizations, etc.
