Well this is not even remotely true

Very true. All it takes is one bite.

OP, my daughter is a Vet. That is what she wanted out of life from a very early age. She could of did anything else if she wanted. A very smart cookie.

I tried to talk her into another field, but I always told her and my son, find something that you will be happy with doing that for the rest of your life.

8 extra years of school and 200K later, she is a Vet. I know for a fact that when she treats a animal, she always tells the person what is what and what is best for treatments. Yes, drug companies do try to push Vets to sell there products, just like a regular doctor are too! But, I know she doesn't do that unless the animal needs it.

Oh, she does donates time each month for free spading, nurturing.

Oh, she loves to hunt too! She is not a crazy animal person.

So, not all Vets are a scam, just like people doctors are not scams. Sure, there are some in it for the money, but that is like everything else.

Big reason i dont have any pets

I am my second Lab. My first one lived 11 years this one is 8. The first Lab was a great hunting dog and went every where with me. When he passed I didn't want another dog not because I don't like dogs but family talked me into it so now I am divorced and have the second Lab. I can promise when he passes I will not own another not because I don't like dogs but because I am tired of worrying what am I going to do with them when I want to go somewhere. So I understand this position.

I am allergic to dogs and cats and am almost glad I am. Talk about a waste of $ on an animal.

What are the damages in LA for pet malpractice? In FL you can only recover the FMV of the dog which is usually like $500. Essentially there is no recourse against a Vet for malpractice.

And this is where you are different than most people. Most do not put a dollar value on a pet as it is part of the family. I would most certainly draw the line at some point but I do everything I can to keep mine healthy. We pay a very small amount of pet health insurance every month. I think it's like $17. But we get almost all the money back in his meds, his shots, and a percentage of any other medical procedure aside from neutering him.

Animals dont need vets like you think they do. After puppy shots, they shouldn't need a vet until later in their life and even then they wont need them often.

If you had a dog that wanted nothing more than to be by your side and do whatever you asked of it, you would understand.

The more time spent with a dog, the more loyal and obedient it will be. Its almost an extension of yourself with much better senses. Ever since I owned my first dog, I always admired that bond. Its not much different than a child except that they learn faster. Dogs arent human and I dont treat mine like they are. They need guidance and when they want nothing more than to please their master its a real joy.

The puppy I rescued from a home at 4 months old already had heartworms. You have to remember the cost of school to become a vet. So the cost also needs to be able to offset vet school costs also. Vets make good money in comparison to the average person, but it's not what you would think. 60-80k on average.

The avg starting salary is 45k. Large animal vets tend to make more like Equine, simply because of the industry.

The average person doesn't go to college for 7 or 8 years and have a doctorate. I don't see what relevance your comparison has.

Can't answer for LA law. I left private practice and now only do work with large animals and my company handles malpractice insurance so I'm out of the loop on current laws. Even with the FMV of the animal, it's not the damages you might face, it's the time, hassle and dealing with lawyers, all of which you do not get compensated for which make the "threaten to sue" a viable practice for skipping on your bill.

Unless you have a Border Collie, you can get ivermectin cheaply and it works perfectly. Won't control fleas.

That's cool. I just watched my step mom growing up spend a fortune on a 2 year old dog with hip/heart conditions, and a cat that literally had nine lives. No way I would ever do that

I always thought the same thing before I got my puppy. I would do stupid things to keep her around if need be

My cat is living on borrowed time when the fiancee rescued him. He's cool but I won't be heart broken

If you must use "doctorate" to refer to a medical degree, use "professional doctorate" so as not to imply a PhD.

Doctorate is generic and encompasses any doctoral degree (MD, DVM, PhD, etc). I’ll continue correctly using the term. Carry on.

So would you describe a residency as "post-doctoral training"? Are residents post-docs?

wrong. Small animal vets (practice owners) anyway make more money than large animal vets. Equine isn't near what its made out to be. The income to time worked ratio is way out of balance. Food animal pracitce is even worse.
