Many vets now offer wellness plans for your pet. You pay a small amount each month and it will include all their shots and exams for the year.

I do this with Banfield at PetSmart. $35/month per dog and I can bring them in anytime at no charge. All their needed shots included. Also twice a year they do comprehensive physicals for them with bloodwork to make sure they are doing ok. Also includes annual dental cleaning. Anything not covered by the plan is discounted.

Same here. LSU vet school makes you pay in advance. They are like vultures when you are mourning your pets.

You are an absolute idiot dude. I would recommend just keeping your mouth shut on topics you know nothing about. You have no clue what veterinarians actually make or do on a daily basis. My wife owns a clinic and makes less than she did working for someone else 15 years ago. Their job is to inform you and care for your pet. If you want the bare minimum then you are wasting their time as much as anything. It's a two way street.

The biggest scare is that heart worm garbage. I've had my dog for over 13 years. She has taken heart worm prevention for a total of maybe 2 years and never once had it, but the vet tries to scare me half to death that my dog will get heart worms tomorrow without it.

It's why there is heart worm medicine you moron.

First off, this dog was foisted on my 13+ years ago. I didn't want it. But I also couldn't abandon it. I felt obligated to care for her and have done so for over 13 years. At the end of the day, it's still an animal incapable of intelligent thought or discourse.

Hell no I wouldn't put my dog through chemo. If they told me she has cancer, I would tell them to put her down asap while she was still there.

I honestly don't know. I mean...I did spend $1400 on dental work on my pug.

This person who spent 10K, were they poor? Went into debt over this expense?

Pets are not even close to being equal to children. I'm wonderful with kids, especially my godchildren, whom I babysit often.

My dad was and is a great father but doesn't give two shits about animals. To equate the two is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

I love when people use insanely small sample sizes/personal experiences to justify things.

Most people never have a problem with their house, maybe no one should have home owners insurance?

Most people don't get in wrecks, maybe no one should have auto insurance or wear a seat belt?

Things like these mitigate risk for a comparatively cheap price. $1200 a year suck for homeowners insurance? Sure, know what sucks worse, not having it and being out of pocket $200,000 or whatever your house cost.

You don't get a heart worm pill because your dog is "probably" going to get one, you get it so it doesn't.

None of this is to say vets don't gouge people. I just find it amusing when people use one personal experience or super tiny sample size to justify things.

Same thing with "I'll never fly so and so, I was delayed 4 hours it was awful"......Yeah, because no one ever gets delayed on the other airlines.

No and no, but the dog died by choking to death before treatments were done. I don't see how anyone could look back at that and feel like it was worth it (unless money is made on the animal)

Had a former boss do that. Bought the dog a few extra years. As he would tell me, "got to spend money on something." Of course our Christmas bonuses didn't happen that year. Bastard.

Sounds like the dog would have been better off if you would have found someone that actually wanted it. Having a dog should be to add joy to your life, not something you keep around out of obligation.

Dogs are awesome.

My wife is Vet that is about to purchase the practice where she works. I see the financials, she definitely isn't gouging anyone.

You seem like an unhappy person and are using this project your unhappiness.

Well they have to study their arse off for decades, and the opportunity cost of a college and post graduate degree is a few hundred thousand dollars, vet school and college aren't cheap, insurance taxes, payroll taxes, legal, accounting expenses, utilities, rent, staff, phones, copy machines, equipment etc. I am surprised their fees are as reasonable as they are .
