re: Is Costco worth it for gas alone

We went Sunday for other stuff. The kids nap post church and I leave them and wife no pics in car and run in after getting gas. The gas is about 20 cents cheaper than anywhere else and is on our way home. Plus I get 4% cash back. It doesn’t really take long and in this context it’s worth it. But no I wouldn’t make a special trip just for gas. Much less join just for that. Again, I’m actually looking to burn time when we go. Otherwise no.

just go before 8am. I never have to wait at Sam's and its 30-45 cents cheaper than the surrounding stations.

Probably depends how much you drive. I know Sams is especially since they give you 5% cash back in addition to cheap gas if you use their credit card.

For Sams, there is a .25 delta between my neighborhood gas and it. So yes, it could be worth it if you save an average of $5 a trip.

Fuel is just one aspect. I buy Supplements there, Wine, Fish, and Coffee. Just those essentials can be worth the yearly subscription. While I don’t need 45 rolls of paper towels at one time, you can usually save money on certain needs.

I am on the road often & it is on my way so the gas savings pays for my membership easily. Costco differs from Sam’s in its offerings. They seem to have more organic foods than Sam’s does if you’re into that sort of thing. I get some groceries there & not in bulk. I use pharmacy & save. I’ve bought tires, TV’s, clothes, Xmas gifts. I basically have to coach myself not to buy shite when I walk in the door

Y'all must have some crazy lines at y'all's Costco. I have never waited for more than 2 cars in my Houston suburb. I think it has about 24 pump spots, maybe 30.

they get pretty long around here, definitely wouldn't wait in the ones I see around here, PSA: watch your six if you're in one of those lines, no security, no attendant, been cases around here of people not paying attention and getting crimed, not a good place to not be paying attention

Yep, savings on vacation rental cars more than justify the membership. Biggest downside to Costco is that they only take Visa, and their produce can sometimes be hit or miss.

At best, it saves about $5 or so with each fill-up. Once the mileage to get there is added in plus the hassle of often having to deal with the cluster of dozens of people trying to get gas at once, it isn't worth that $5 for me.
I occasionally get gas there if I'm going there anyway. But like the another poster said. Benny's (Baton Rouge) membership is the way to go for gas. Especially if you don't care about swirls on your daily commuter car. Benny's gas + cash-back credit card > Costco

It's 3.25 here at Costco (which is about 10 miles out of my way).
Wavaho on the way home is 3.29 and is always competitive with Sam's and Costco.
I get 5% cash back at any gas station with my card...
So about 3.13 at Wavaho.
So I say no.

It’s the only store I go to that I feel like I need to buy everything I see. I don’t know how they do it.

I go in the morning and never wait for literally longer than a minute.

Sam's has a much shorter line but several of their pumps don't work.
Also, the hoses are short and difficult to use if your gas cap is on the opposite side.

No.
One of the reps told me that their research showed no significant time savings versus their self checkout. It definitely sounded like a defensive answer.
I politely indicated that I was skeptical that was true.

They were not designed for people to stand in / block the lane of travel.
I understand why people do it and it is really not a big deal anymore since they blocked the center lane because of all the car jackings.

Seriously I don’t see how it doesn’t save time. I scan my crap as I shop and then pay and walk out. The only line is at the exit and I’m super thankful for it on days where everyone seems to be at Sam’s.

Gas and meat are the best savings in the store.
I wouldn’t drive out of my way to just get gas but I fill the truck up during the weekly Costco food run and it’s a $6-7 savings vs neighboring stations every time. Worth the 10 extra minutes of waiting - I’d just be scratching my butt at home anyway.
So to answer your question - yes. Gas savings can easily pay for the membership.
