I’m ok with staying home on Christmas Day. Why is that bad?

My sister lives in College Station and really wants the family to come to her place for the holidays. She is off this entire week and next from teaching. My break starts Friday. I told my wife I didn’t want to hop into a car and drive 4.5 hours to hang out with the family. We see my parents often here in town. They’ll be up there, but we can easily celebrate Christmas on Monday when they come back home.

When I go on break, I want to relax. My wife is indifferent. I told her I’d rather go see her family in San Antonio, a shorter drive and there’s not 9 kids running around.

I’m already on the shite list because I went to the aTm/LSU game and didn’t visit. I told them it was a day trip and I’m not inviting myself to stay at someone else’s house. She has come to town a handful of times and never visits me…I just accept that’s how things are, but somehow she gets offended by my not wanting to stop by.

No that’s perfectly acceptable to want to stay home with your wife and kids if you have them.

Live your life. People get mad, then they get over it.

There’s no way I’m driving 4.5 hours on Christmas Day especially with kids in tow.

You'll always have to make the effort to visit them since they will never visit you. Yes, that is just how things are and they've already justified their thought process.

We stay at home. We actually started doing chicken, ground beef, and brisket tacos / nachos ready to roll for people to come by on Christmas Day as they want.

It's not. I do it every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We invite everyone from both sides to come and usually end up with 40 or so people at the house. I do 90% of the cooking.

I get the feeling. But you only get so many of these holidays.

The older my parents get, the more important it seems to become to get the whole family under one roof on Christmas if possible.

That said, y’all seem to have the numbers locally, by my logic your sister should be driving!

We don’t have kids. She has 3. My other sister has 6. San Antonio is more of a central location for us. I have a sister there, and my wife’s family is there. I have no problem driving a couple hours on Christmas Day and staying the night. If I add another 5 hours and 3 kids to the equation because someone is a homebody (but still wants to host), then I feel like I’m not getting any relaxation on a weekend, much less a holiday.

When we had kids, we made a decision we weren’t traveling for Christmas if at all possible. My parents lived 3 hours away and wife’s 10 hours away. We would usually go see mine the weekend before and save Christmas day for us on our own. It’s your’s and your family’s decision and your sister should understand that.

She comes down each year for an event at the church in which we grew up. The church is about 4 blocks from my house. She has never set foot in my home. 8 trips down since I’ve lived here, and she can’t take a left turn and chat for an hour.

I’m not a saint, but this road goes both ways.

If she's got room to put y'all up for the night, you have no reason not to go and enjoy yourselves and precious time with family all together.Drive back the next day.

Otherwise, don't drive 4.5 hours to eat and hang out and drive back.
