We went every winter as a kid with my church and it was only a couple hundred dollars and a long fricking bus ride
I got pretty good at it but if I tried it now i'd probably break every nine in my body.
We were far from elite
but I clearly remember purgatory, winter Park, Aspen, telluride....
I can still picture the map of all the purgatory runs in my head.
ETA flying full speed down a mountain on waxed skis is fun as hell. Best adrenaline rush I had as a kid.

Pussy.

I hate the altitude.
It's elevation and not altitude. Altitude refers to how far above the ground you are, elevation is relative to some level (like sea level)
I live at 9100' above sea level. Can be challenging for the less fit among us.

On the slopes? What?

Yeah, bc youre not used to the elevation and have a hangover on top of it.

As a 2 time skiier, I feel like I'm going to kill someone when going down. Pizza does not slow me down, it does not work. I'm not doing it wrong, it does not work. I don't get it.
TWO time?
Talking about doing pizza to slow down, so you cant really ski yet, and yet on a rant about how skiing is overrated.
Like, youve never actually done it correctly.
I get not wanting to pay that much to fall a bunch to learn, but lets not act like you have much perspective to call skiing and riding overrated.
Speaking of, going to get me some laps in tomorrow before work and go watch my daughter take her first snowboarding lesson.

OP sounds like a 4 year old throwing a tantrum.

Things suck when you are learning and worse when your fitness is suspect. Not skipping leg day is an advantage as well.
There are outdoor activities more fun than carving through waist deep Alta powder or making first tracks down a groomed run.
Skiing is like a lot of physical activities the younger you start the more vertical your skill graph is. A mind not clouded with ACL tears and subdural hematomas can simply get on with the process.
BTW if pizza doesn't stop you then you are doing it wrong.

There are dozens of small, low elevation skiing operations where you dont have to worry about these things.
People choose the big high elevation ski resorts due to status, not skiing.

I'm with you bro. I love the mountains. Not a fan of crowded mountains.

8/10 people I've known that went skiing, came home with a broken bone. Pass for me

I have never been skiing, but snowboarding is one of the funnest activities I’ve done in my lifetime. I had the pleasure of living in Utah for three years, so I had time to get pretty decent at it. Actually, I picked it up right away. If you are athletic and have coordination, it’s pretty easy to learn.

I have been on water ski's single and double. Never on snow ski's. I am in my sixties and never plan on snow ski's.

Only went once.. did the pizza wedge the entire first day, next morning my shins felt like they had stress fractures, to the point where I struggled to pizza.
Forced me to learn to lift my feet and turn to slow down, and after that it was some of the most fun I can remember having.

I went to Breck last Friday after the parking lots at keystone were full. The place was crazy packed. 95%+ of the people absolutely suck at skiing/snowboarding.
I suck at golf. I couldn’t imagine making a vacation out of this activity.
I love Breckenridge, but yeah, don't go on weekends and holidays. Same as golf. I live on a golf course, but I only play during the week. I start early and I can play 18 by myself in less than 3 hours.
For people who think it is repetitive, Breckenridge has 4 peaks. You can start on one side and work your way toward the other, probably make it only half way before the day is done.
Not only is it good exercise, but it can also be intellectually stimulating too. I have had some great conversations with strangers on lifts. Same as with golf. I often time pair up with someone I don't know, and we have great talks while we are playing.

Nobody really skis those. Pretty much just after work snowboarders.

There are some people that form their whole personality about skiing and live over 1,500 miles away from the nearest Colorado mountain. They are on par or worse than marathon runners. I've done it before. Was it fun? Not really. Is it worth the money all in for everything? Not at all.
I don't get the hype. I hate 0 degree temp. I hate the altitude. Ears constantly popping and unpopping. I don't like the lines. I don't like how much effort it takes to make one step in 2 feet deep snow. It's like 40 regular steps. Hangovers seem to be worse in the mountains. It's repetitive. As a 2 time skiier, I feel like I'm going to kill someone when going down. Pizza does not slow me down, it does not work. I'm not doing it wrong, it does not work. I don't get it. I think people like it because other people like it, and it's in a rich town so it's considered an elitest hobby. Not because they actually like it.
It sounds like waiting in hour long lines in 100 degree weather for a 3 minute ride at Disney World is more your thing.
If you are using the pizza technique, you never experienced skiing. It sounds like you never left the bunny slopes.
I have never heard of ear popping until now.
It's feels colder in Louisiana right now with the humidity than it does on dry mountains skiing.
I can pull up the lift line waits and see that every non bunny lift has no line.
It's clear that skill is the issue, not the sport.

Yeah. Losers going in debt to go to Co to appear rich but are really in debt for a vaca.

Sorry you've had this experience.
As someone else stated, you would have a different opinion if you targeted a smaller resort at a lower elevation. Also, you will not have a good experience if you are not in reasonable fitness regardless of where you go.
We've typically gotten season passes to a small Virginia resort within driving distance. Looks like this year we'll actually have good snow. And fit in a trip or two to a West Virginia resort or so. The best days to go are during the week...can ski down and get right back on the lift.
But I do look forward to me/my wife's travel plan over the next 5 years that will have us staying in places like Co, Utah, NM for extended periods.

Skiing is like anything. The better you get, the more fun it becomes.
Posted on 1/9/25 at 6:13 am to Saunson69
Snowboarding is my favorite thing to do on earth which is odd considering I live so far away from it. But when I’m going down the mountain it’s the most freeing I feel. There’s nothing like it for me. And I’m not great at it. But I’m good enough to cruise down the mountain at a nice speed and take it all in. fricking love it. It’s worth every penny to me.
Posted on 1/9/25 at 6:19 am to Saunson69
You have to work at it. You're not going to like it the first 1-2 times, but once you're competent on skis, it's a lot of fun sliding down a mountain with a great view. Also, not all skiing is at zero degrees
Also, once you're good enough to be on the blue slopes, the lines get better. The green lines are always packed regardless of the resort.

I always say this about it and people are like...well it's something ya gotta do once.... sure is an expensive thing to not enjoy.
You do decide to try it once you pay for the trip, lodging, all the shite, lessons, and start to get the hang of it right when you're over it and resdy to go
