don’t think D3 can give athletic scholarships.

quote:Absolutely agree. That was one of the primary pros for Hampden Sydney. Hell, the weekend he stayed there he connected with a pair of football player brothers whose parents live in Ft Lauderdale and bring their boat over to their place in the Bahamas for the weekend.
Not saying your son made the wrong choice, but a football star at a private school with wealthy alumni will have a lot of doors open for him.
And, academics of course. They require all students to take a Rhetoric course once a year where they learn/reinforce how to prepare for debates, presentations, high pressure communications. I was all over that. Oh well.

Male only liberal arts college? That couldn’t sound more gay. Be glad he isn’t going there.
Not the vibe when I was there. Talking to coaches, players, former players. It was pointed out that Longwood College is 5 mins away, where 5,000 young fillies await.
Also, Hampden Sydney founders included Patrick Henry and James Madison. I don't think "gay" was in fashion. They were men.

Yep. He's gonna be in the hull of those ships in July, August, gonna feel it first hand.
His ultimate goal is to get out of Virginia for Florida. We have family / friends in PCB, one of whom is an elec contractor. That's what he's targeting.

I guess it's one thing I do miss in retirement. Creating clear, concise communications for the teams / orgs I worked for, to drive work.

TLDR:
Stepson who played an extra year of HS football to get a full ride somewhere just misses, and chooses to work/play for the Apprentice School in Newport New Va.
Background:
Stepson lived/breathed football for the last 10 years. Good student, A’/B’s without seemingly any effort. And good SAT. But school was a means to an end. His goal was always to be good enough to play college football. He’s a tweener, however. He’s 6’1 and plays at 240, defensive end. He wasn’t happy w the local HS, so he and his mother pestered me for months to let him reclass and do his senior year again at a private school. He had great success, they won another state title, he was All Conf / All State for the private school league they are in.
His Life Goal
My stepson, after going to private school and hanging out with wealthy kids for a while, had decided his path is to open his own business. I’d been telling him for years that owning your own business is the real opportunity to wealth here in the US if you are willing to bust your arse.
He also refused to consider a STEM degree. He doesn’t want to sit at a desk like I did.
Football offers:
Got offers for a bunch of Div 3 and a couple of Div 2 teams. The most compelling was one close to us, Hampden Sydney in Farmville Va. Male only, liberal arts / business, created in 1775, every building on the Natl Historic sites registry. Bunch of rich families, lots of alumni, tradition. I did the parents tour. They have beaucoup money. The football facilities for a div3 team were amazing.
But, in his final offer, they would not pay everything. We’d have to come up with 10K / year. Kid knew it would come out of his college fund. So he was undecided. Most of the football offers were looking like this - I think they want you to have a little skin in the game.
Another interesting offer was from the Apprentice School in Newport News. Run by Huntington Ingalls shipyards, they offer 19 different shipbuilder trades, in 4/8 year apprentice programs. They actually have Div 3 sports, including football. And they pay $25/hour to go there to work and learn.
Other college:
His grades / SAT were good enough to get accepted in th Va Tech biz school (and JMU, LSU, etc), but just as a normal student - no football. But at 30K / year, he said hell no.
AI Influence:
I started the corp Robotics practice at a Fortune 100 company about 7-8 years ago. We’d automated 100’s of processes that freed up temps saving lots of money. Next I was getting into Claude and Copilot AI when I retired. I was concerned that if my stepson went for just a Business degree (instead of STEM) that’d he might not have all the job opps he would have 10 years ago because of AI / Robotics.
Decision:
He interviewed at the shipyard and requested to join the Electrical apprenticeship. Apparently most kids ask for this but get assigned something else. Since stepson is gonna play football for them, they quickly agreed and he’s getting what he wants. He starts July 13.
Parents are happy
We’re finally gonna kick off our late life travel plan. Younger nurse wife (no pics) is gonna work and we’re gonna live different places for the next 5 years. First up, given our news above, is Virginia Beach. We’ve already got a condo on the water through fall so we can be on hand to watch the stepson play his games.

I'm sure the opposite, sorry to disappoint you.
As Americans continue to get fatter and more sedentary, cruises will continue to be a primary way for people to vacation - because it's EASY.
I'm done with cruises for now. Did them as a family when the kids were younger. Will probably do it again when we have grandkids.
That said, I've always had a blast on cruises - because I do that where ever I go.

Take a trip by yourself that takes you completely out of your comfort zone.
I took a two month trip out west, slept in the back of my Wrangler.
Visited friends, family in Albuquerque, Denver, Co Springs, Salida, Vegas.
Went to these National Parks: Zion, Grand Canyon, Arches, Great Basin, Canyonlands, Bryce, Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
Camped in many national forests and all over BLM land. Moab, Sedona, Prescott, Flagstaff, Crested Butte, Sante Fe, Ely NV.
Mountain biked and hiked all of those places.
It was a great reset for me.

I'd recommend this book and taking it seriously. It can help ward off the natural depression, drop in fitness, etc., that automatically shows up for most people when they retire.
The gist is it tells you to consider your fitness level as a new part time job. They want you spending an hour or more 6 days a week for aerobic level exercise and strength training. It's all about your circulation.

Of course the OT thinks it's gay. But if they were honest, they'd admit their coonass grandpas could cut a rug with grandma. Ain't nothing wrong with a man taking the lead over a woman and having a good time on the dance floor.
Women WANT men to take control. And you know what the women say about a man who is a good lead on the dancefloor? That he’s good somewhere else…
Ex wife got me into dancing a long time ago. It’s how I met my current wife.
Now we are a staple at any live music venue in the million+ area I live in. Just look up front near the band, we'll be there. We’ve met so many fun people.
There’s always more women that want to dance than men. There's a string of them where ever I go that are ready to go. Luckily my wife's not the jealous type (and no we’re not swingers or any of that crap). I’m happy to oblige these women.
My advice is to take lessons and join a local dance group.
I’m a good, not great dancer. But I’m versatile. I can do a some 2step, swing, shag, and even salsa. Plan on taking more lessons as we are finally about to be empty nesters.

Anything "Apple" has a price tag. Known this since the 80's being in computer sales.
Never paid for iTunes, God what a rip-off.
Never paid for their phones or apps.
Never paid for their proprietary development tools.
Learned what open source was using Unix in the LSU computer labs in the 80's. Never looked back.
Frick Apple.

I don’t understand this reasoning. You prefer presidents that have spent more time in DC among the establishment?
To be fair, looking back at the shite newcomer Trump had to fend off in term one... maybe having someone that's hip to the swamp a bit isn't the worst idea.
Don't know where ya'll been. Rubio's been killing it since he stepped in. He's consistently killed it in the Cabinet meetings, and you can tell Trump things the world of him.
To take that unflinching polish, quick wit, and battle-hardness and turn it against the Chuck Schumers, Hakeem Jefferies and other Dem clowns?
Sign me up. I'm watching every minute of that.

TLDR: Older single blonde stewardesses are to be avoided.
Yes, a friend of my wife’s (that I unfortunately introduced her to).
Attractive blonde, former stewardess, older, I think 60. Started out 10 years ago as a fun, talkative, positive person to be around.
But over the last couple of years, not so much.
First she got blotto wasted a couple of times on our boat at the lake, in front of some people she didn’t even know.
She’s made multiple comments about my football playing teenaged son like “OMG, he’s so handsome and hot!”.
She’s become anti-male and bitter as she gets older and no-one wants to date her and makes comments about it. Ironically she was still married because of finances, but has her own condo in town and her hubby lives at the lake.
Her former meth-head daughter got involved with a wealthy dude my age last year and she just gloats on and on about his money and assets (even though he’s about 350 and looks like he’ll keel over any time). Doesn’t help that he bought her a $30,000 ring while they were all on vacation.
Late last year she gets into a shouting match on the phone with her estranged hubby. Tells him to frick off. What does he do? Goes out into the garage and shoots himself dead.
The latest is that she saw one of my friends last week at a concert. She was lit up and talked to him about his upcoming marriage. Exclaimed in front of a bunch of people “you mean you’re gonna get married to this woman and you haven’t fricked her?”. My friend was aghast (he’s has strong faith).
I think I’ve convinced my wife this lady is a bad person and to steer clear.
