I think it plays a big role in reliability and the overall used car market looks even worse when you consider it.

How many properly maintain their vehicle, outside of routine oil changes? I'm talking about transmission fluid/filter, diff fluid changes, tire rotation, etc etc.

I will be the first to admit, I used to be that person, I've taken multiple vehicles from new to 100k with nothing but oil changes. I now do my own maintenance, and do everything recommended with likely more aggressive intervals.

I see Carfax after Carfax with 0 maintenance history outside of oil changes. Makes you wonder are that many people doing their own maintenance or running forever fluid and dumping a vehicle off at 100k.

Very few people, myself included, follow all of the scheduled maintenance on their vehicles.

Ive taken cars and trucks anywhere from 230,000 miles to 446,000 miles and didn't do much besides oil changes.

I'll guess that an F250 and a Toyota Carolla with zero Carfax maintenance history are very different in practice.

But, modern cars are fairly easy to get to 60k+ miles with not much more than oil, filters, tires and brakes. My old Nissan Frontier cleared 95k miles with that regimen and nothing else that I remember.

My wife (no pics) does with her 4Runner. Only at 115k right now and it’s still running great.

I get a company truck and don’t keep them long enough to do anything other than oil changes.

ETA She doesn’t do the maintenance, she brings it somewhere then calls me and tells me what they’re quoting and I tell her what to approve and not to approve.

It did bite me in the backside once when they wanted to change the marker lights in the headlamps for $100. Told her no I’d do it….didnt know I’d have to take the whole bumper assembly off to get the headlights out to change them.

Depends on the vehicle, what I use it for and how long I plan on keeping it.

Race cars gets everything well ahead of schedule because it gets abused frequently.
Dailys gets whatever I feel like. I never rotate the tires but they might when I bring it to the stealership. Diffs I pretty much ignore, trans depends on the car.

scheduled maintenance

I know rotating parts induce wear. Filters clog and degrade in efficiency with use/time. Vibration effects. Oil increases viscosity, and on. But the recommended maintenance schedules come from the OEM. I suspect they're fraught with conservatism because they have a vested interest in performing maintenance and selling parts. Big business.

I get my oil changes, replace filters and fluids, check my tire wear but I'm not committed to following OEM schedules.

I've driven my last 2 cars up to 250k miles and never changed any fluids other than oil. Most of the time I go way over 10k miles between changes. Never had any drivetrain issues.

If it is a DI (direct injection) or FI (forced induction) engine, they might not be far from wrong.

My vehicle tracks a lot of that stuff internally. I change something when it tells me it's time. I rotate the tires every oil change

I drove a little mazda pickup 403,000 miles with no major troubles. I currently have a 2014 F150 that I just had the transmission rebuilt for $4000 and it has 270,000 miles on it.

All I make sure I do is replace the oil and filter every 6-7000 miles.

If you just drive up to 100K, pretty much just oil changes are required and tires when they wear out.

Past 100K you start getting into the other wear items and other fluids.

It’s why most get rid of one before it hits 100K.

Most manufacturers recommend maintenance every 12k miles or 12 months. Some like my Lexus is 5K miles. I don’t believe in a timeline. Mercedes recommends maintenance at 12 months or 12k miles. I only put 2k in 12 months. So I reset the notification and wait until I put 10K on it. The Lexus I put 2K a month so it gets more frequent maintenance.

I follow most. It’s not that hard. And luckily I can do most myself..
