I stop several nights a week by myself on my way home from work. Up until the last few years, I was always hurrying to leave work because I had to pick up kids and hurry home. Now my kids are grown and it’s just nice to be able to not have to hurry and to just sit and relax in peace and have a few drinks. I’ve come to know the bartenders and some of the regulars pretty well and will usually talk and cut up with them but I also like to just sit and drink quietly sometimes. I’m not lonely or sad and I’m secure enough that it doesn’t bother me to sit alone. I enjoy having time for myself. By the time I head home, the traffic is much better too.

Some of the most interesting nights of my life started with me drinking alone at a bar

I knew this thread would be full of people who go to bars alone yelling at you and defending themselves

Some nights I try to get a way and I might go watch some sports. I don't see how that's sad.

Is there a more sad sight? Me and a couple buddies meet up once or twice a week at our local spot and there are always the same two or three guys sitting at the bar just blindly starring at the TV. Occasionally I'll try and start a conversation while ordering a beer but they look pretty depressed. Why not just sit at home and drink? Do they think the girl of their dreams is going to walk in at some point and save them? That the bartender will feel sorry for them and give them a bj? Wish I could help. Must be a bad rut to be stuck in.

why? sometimes when I'm on the road I just cut out by myself and go pub crawling, it's fun, and sometimes I don't care to hang around with my co-workers after the work is done

I sometimes do this. I don't like hanging out with large groups of people so 0-3 is the sweet spot. It's still more fun being in the vicinity of people having fun than doing nothing. Plus I'm genuinely friends with several of the bartenders at my hole so I generally just hang out with them if I don't know anyone else there.

No kids or wife here. I sit at the bar alone 2-4 times a week. Trust me when I tell you, you do not need to feel sorry for me.

When I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself.

Or maybe we're just letting him know that what he had to say was dumb.

I am a very social person. However, one of my great joys in life is when I travel, sitting at a bar alone and getting drunk. I highly recommend it.

I agree with this. Whenever I travel I'll always try and hit a bar just to get a sense for what the area/city/town is like.

Hell, I was in South Philadelphia the other week waiting for my flight out of the bomb cyclone and hit a local pub the night before. Great people watching and usually end up talking to people. Better than sitting in the hotel room all night.

I'll also go to the bar by myself if I want to watch a game and no one is interested or in town. Again, if you're a confident and friendly person there are always people to talk to.

Maybe they are just comfortable by themselves in relative peace and quiet?

I'll occasionally stop at my favorite spot for a private beer after a big meeting or long day at work, and often the benefit is a transition between work and home. Just a few minutes of quiet beer time watching sports.

I will occasionally grab a beer at a little place here. I love it, like a 30 minute vacation. Put a little money in the digital jukebox, play a few songs.

My wife and kids love it when I do it, I come home a happier person.

Lets not forget that there is no greater joy than being in an airport bar by yourself. No commitments to answer the phone or do anything, you have the excuse of the travel day.

frick a airport bar. Nothing but traveling salesmen flaunting and miserable business people trying to get home.

I have met a couple of nice ladies at airport bars but the batting average is horrid.

I used to travel for work a lot, and I had to teach myself to go out and do stuff by myself. Dinner, movies, bars. Id even go to sporting events by myself. I would want to see what each city had to offer. One of the best times Ive ever had(I think, got black out drunk) was when I was in Minneapolis one Halloween. I went and got a costume and found where everyone went in the city. Had a great time.

I dont travel for work anymore, but I still do things by myself. Sometimes my friends either have work, their SO wont let them out, or other stuff. That doesnt stop me. I really like it. Went to a concert alone a few months ago, and met these four women that were in town from Dallas. We hung out and even went bar hopping after.

I love doing shite alone.
