I wonder if she’d have refused the airlift if she’d actually been conscious and had the ability to refuse it.
Overheating isn’t really the most serious of all serious medical emergencies. I’d probably rather have to take some extra time to be driven to the hospital than to be charged $70,000 for that.

I wonder how far his fall was. I would have never guessed a trekking pole could impale somebody like that. Had to have been a lot of force on it, since it's not sharp on either end.

He is an emergency health care worker. He self triaged and knew his life was not in peril. Someone else could be badly injured and need that flight. He recognized this and decided to walk.

That could be true. But I think the main way that his line of work relates to this story is because he knew how expensive the medical helicopters are due to his line of work. I had no idea before I opened this thread that those helicopter rides seriously costs $70,000, and I don't think most other people do either. I thought it was bad enough how I've heard that an ambulance ride costs $1,500 or something like that.

I live in a county of 70000 and 250000 within a 50 mile radius of me. I have a hospital 3 miles from me that employs 1800 including 230 physicians and another hospital seven miles from me that employs 1400 including 180 physicians.
If I have any internal damage or not much more than breaking a singular bone, I am flown(two hours by car) to Vanderbilt in Nashville.
What can you do? It seems silly with all of those doctors and no one can see you in an emergency. We don't handle emergencies any longer, appointment only. It's just policy now.
There is a helicopter evac company located here also. My wife bought a policy directly through them last year. I hope not to use it.

People that hike in the mountains regularly know this. It said in the article that he assessed the situation and determined that no vital organs had been punctured.

Not that bad but a nurse I worked with did something that impressed me.
She got her left index finger tangled up in a hospital bed and broke it about midnight,finger was at about 45*angle,She refused to go to E.R,,she got another nurse to cut a tongue blade in half,she pulled the finger back straight and they taped tongue blades for a splint.She finished her shift and then went to E.R.
Her story was she didn’t want to leave her co-workers in a lurch and the E.R. wasn’t going to do anything different than what she did.
Maybe 1 nurse in a thousand would have done that,most would have gone to E.R.and then home.

you can swap them out with rubber tips or just put a rubber cap over the tungsten carbide tips, but if you don't you better not fall on them
