Here's a real sad conversation that needs to be had - there's entirely too many veterans claiming full disability who saw zero combat time, went to zero combat zones and they're drawing these benefits in perpetuity
My wife's cousin is one of these. Never saw any combat whatsoever. Fell out of the back of a truck unloading supplies and broke his foot. He was 33 years old at the time. Doesn't work because he gets full veterans disability and an emotional support dog that he takes everywhere.

Sounds like a system we should tear down and rebuild from the ground up.
For some reason the whole system improved a great deal from 2017 through 2020.

But a servicemember that is actually 100 % disabled and cannot work they get additional monies from govt but it's a lot of hoops to jump through.

I don't see how a broken foot got him 100%

so somone that suffers a life changing injury in training or normal ops is on his own….. frick you and frick that, it would be the end of our all volunteer force.

Come on, man. You know this thread isn't talking about people who actually got injured in training exercises. Half of the guys I served with are on disability and it's because they're making shite up that's hard to disprove, like tinnitus.

It’s probably not a popular opinion but I think only people injured in battle should get disability for life.

So a soldier is injured or maimed in a training exercise gets nothing but if it happens combat then they get compensation Same injury, same affects on his/her quality of life, and both scenarios are in the line of duty.

Yeah your logic makes total sense.

You are being downvoted while also stating facts.

My ETS was many years ago when a company contacted me asking if I needed assistance with getting VA benefits. I declined because there was nothing wrong with me.

I mentioned this at work when many of my coworkers admitted that they were receiving ‘disability’ even though they were working full time.

It is a huge issue that no one want to address because it would be political suicide.

This is really it. Anytime a system is set up like this, everyone is going to be out to get theirs. The only way to curtail it is to regulate it more closely, and that's a far cry from saying no veterans deserve it.

The VA is well aware. They will eventually do something. There are attorneys and doctors running payment mills. Pretty much the same as social security disability.

I was in for 31 years and have seen many people get disability who never saw a second of combat. The system is definitely being abused.

All these programs should be means tested and phase out over a certain income level.

I also think there should be more civilian oversight (similar to jury duty) on any type of welfare program. People are shown facts about a disability claim (anonymously) and allowed to ask questions of the claimant. Civilian peers can give thumbs up or down. Same with people trying to get social security disability, food stamps, etc.

I think way too many people get VA disability and the people who truly need it don’t get enough. Monies should be directed toward people who are truly disabled from service (whether combat or training) and not someone who has ringing ears or a back ache.

I've noticed the amount of lifted truck and jeeps kitted out on custom wheels with a DV license plate has skyrocketed in recent years.

I have an acquaintance who will retire from the military at 45 getting something like 7k a month due to “disabilities” like PTSD and migraines that are subjective and either don’t exist or are greatly exaggerated m. He is prescribed a pile of medicine that he never takes. No objective physical disability. He’s looking forward to moving to his native Ecuador and starting an ecotourism resort and farm with the money.

Our tax dollars at work.

I agree with the poster above that it continues because it’s a third rail that no politician will touch

Professional armies are expensive as frick. If there wasn't access to a gravy train, enlistments would plummet. The draft won’t fly with the public and Washington still wants to fight around the world.

What if a group of taxpayers were given baseball bats and the welfare/food stamp seeker had to run through some sort of gauntlet to earn their gibs

No where does it say disability is required to come from combat. Add that we no longer have a volunteer force.

I'm an audiologist and have done many C&P evaluations for hearing loss and tinnitus. I would say that about 30% flat out try to fake hearing loss. There is no way to definitely tell about tinnitus but there is a reason why it is the #1 disability.

What has dishearten me are two things:
1) during the chart/records review you routinely see 70, 80, 90 100% disability. PTSD has become a MONSTER, routinely receiving 50% or more rating alone.
2) started seeing a wave of "secondary" evaluations for things like migraines.

PTSD, migraines and tinnitus is all a subjective evaluations and the "script" is out. Obviously I'm not saying that these disabilities cannot be related to service activities but there are many whose records/DD214 do not agree with their reports.
