Learn some Japanese. You don't need to be fluent and no one will expect you to be, but knowing some basics will make a difference. You can use something like duolingo or buy a Japanese survival book.
Get a tourist SUICA card for paying for trains and buses. Its rechargeable and you wont need to calculate fares. Only last for 2(?) weeks though I think. Can usual buy in the airport on arrival
For the shinkansen you need to buy tickets, download the app and you can buy in advance. If have a more relaxed schedule you can buy the unreserved seats and take your chances on availability. If you are on a tight schedule or traveling during peak hours pay a little more for reserved seats.
Domestic air travel is an option if you are traveling far within the country and is similar in price to riding the train. In some cases it is the more convenient option and faster. ANA and JAL are the main airlines, then Peach is cheaper (not recommended if you have a lot of luggage)

My experiences in Japan:
18 is the age for getting a license. I don't think its a big difference.
You have 2 options to get a license:
1. Go to the DMV and take the test directly. You may pass the written test on the first try. You WILL FAIL the driving portion on the first try, probably on the second and you might pass on the 3rd. You have to wait a few weeks between attemps and pay the fees each time.
2. Go to a driving school and pay $2000-$4000 and take classes for 3-6 months. You'll pass the written and the driving on the first try.
Its mostly a trial of endurance, commitment and financial sacrifice
Are the drivers in Japan better than the US? Id say generally yes, but they still have bad drivers. I think temperament towards driving is more of a difference. Very little road rage or super aggressive driving
