Totally agree and get that...but I keep seeing shows where people have really nice kitchens with islands and a nice living space taking out load bearing walls with the quickness because they want to "open it up". Saw one where I swear the whole first floor was one room...living, kitchen, dining, "office space" and play area without a single wall. I wish the cameras would have stuck around to see how productive the "office nook" was with kids playing and dinner cooking.

Every renovation show:

Bob is a janitor at the local high school and his wife a stay at home mom. They have a budget of $800,000.00.

We have so many walls our house is like a maze and I love it. Less spacious in each room, but you actually have privacy. And people can stay up late without waking everyone else.

Our house is larger but has a mostly open floor plan. We did closed or semi-closed walls for certain rooms for more privacy or for sound purposes but keto remainder of the House open entertaining, keeping an eye on the kids and so I’m not isolated from what’s on tv or happening in the house while cooking. Our living room has large French doors on 3 sides that can be closed to block outside sound and light or kept open for flow and view of back yard.

I’d like to move the media room to the ground floor in our next house so we can reclaim it from the teens so will likely have a combined open concept with specific closed areas again. It would feel suffocating for me to be surrounded by walls in smaller rooms all the time.

I like somewhat open concepts. The trend now is basically the living room, dining area, and kitchen to be all one room. No walls or separation of any kind. It’s a little too open for my taste. Feels like an apartment.

We're in an open floorplan now and hate it...

it's like living in an apartment without any of the good parts.

Fairly accurate... then the plot thickens:
Customer: What we really wanna do is "open the concept up"

Contractor: Great...we're just gonna go ahead and knock down every wall in your house with impunity

Contractor after a commercial break: soooo turns out 3 of those walls are load bearing...who knew??? Anyway we can still open it up for whatever fricking reason you want that done....it's just gonna run you an addition $80,000

Customer: Well...living in one giant communal space is a dream of ours so....sure..let's do it

The common area of ours is fairly open for a mid 70's house. There is a big brick wall with a built in oven on one side and a fireplace on the other separating the kitchen and living room.

I like being able to wash dishes or cook while still being able to watch the game.

Also a better layout for when company is over, we can hang around the island and or living space without feeling secluded.

My gfs parents have a big arse house but it’s basically one big arse room plus bedrooms. There’s nowhere to go other than sit in a bedroom to be separated from everyone else in the house.

My house is much older and traditional and has multiple rooms for leisure in addition to bedrooms. So my brother and I could play video games in the back room while my mom cooked and my dad could read the paper in our living room and nobody would be interfering with the other.

GFs house if dad wants to read the paper he has to either go read it on his bed or be subject to the noises from the kitchen plus us watching tv in the living room. Can’t even go to his “office” because that’s still part of the one big arse central room.

Open concepts look great in pictures and touring but if you live in a house with more than two people they’re not great because you basically can’t get away from anybody without being in a bedroom.

For our current home at 1700sf, it's annoying. If we had our layout plus a separate living room-type space and more hall/entry space to the other rooms it would bother me less.

You walk in and unless you visit the bedrooms, you're standing in our entire house.

Where you can cook in your living room.

GIVE ME WALLS... I want rooms with a purpose....not a living/dining/kitchen room.

I'm fully onboard with this. When we bought our house (built in 1969) five and a half years ago, I envisioned removing walls and opening up the space. But after living in it for a couple of years, we decided to maintain the layout and renovated it just as it was laid out.

We have a kitchen that can be completely closed off from living room and dining room. Our living room can be closed off from kitchen and foyer. And we have a den in the front of the house that we use for kids play area.
Overall, I have to say that I am very happy with all of my doors.

Our parties always end up the same way. Women in the kitchen and men around the TV. We don't want to hear them cackle and they don't want to hear us yelling at the game. That's the natural order of things.

I live in an old house that has lots of rooms.

Walls are nice until you find yourself cooking alone in the kitchen while everyone else is having a great time in the living room...

Yeah I will never have a house without a open kitchen. I love having a "social kitchen" if you will.
