I've been watching a ton of reno shows during all this and I'm blown away by people's desire to tear down every fricking wall in their house. I've lived in a place that was open kitchen/living room and it drove me crazy anytime my wife washed dishes, poured cereal...fricking anything. GIVE ME WALLS... I want rooms with a purpose....not a living/dining/kitchen room.

Dining rooms have been wasted space for a long time. Its a lot easier to keep an eye on kids and be social while cooking.

It's for entertaining, Scott.

People spend most of their time inside (even in non-Corona world), but being inside actually sucks, so they want to make it feel like there's a ton of room in their house...almost like they're not actually inside. Makes being indoors less claustrophobic, does something good for the human psyche not to stare at the same 4 walls all day long.

Fixed for my living situation. We had to take out a wall to make the shoebox more livable.

I mean...your still staring at 4 walls...and as an added bonus hear everything everyone else is doing whether or not your involved

It's better for entertaining guests and staying connected with family. It also leads to less wasted square footage. It isn't required, so if you prefer isolation then you can find or build a house that is right for you.

Also, get a new dishwasher. Most now can hardly be heard standing right next to them.

Open floor plans are vastly better for entertaining. Very few people actually entertain, but everyone believes that they will.

Fewer walls to burn in a fire.

We actually just did...but my wife is one who insists on scrubbing the crap out of everything before it goes in.... so it was a solid 15 minutes of rushing water every day.

A more open house than what I have now would be a slight advantage for entertaining, but that happens maybe once-twice a month. Not wanting to be disturbed while I'm watching TV by something going on in the kitchen is a daily occurrence.

If you have a big enough house separate rooms are preferred. Sub 2500 sqft open concept makes more sense. No one wants to entertain with people trying to cram into tiny galley kitchen or a living room that only seats 4-6 comfortably.

2500 sq ft is a good sized house for an average sized family. That same family probably lived in a 1500 sq ft house 40 years ago.

Assuming your TV was made in the last half decade, just buy a decent pair of Bluetooth over ear headphones and call it a day.

We are doing it currently just because we are expecting our first child. Wife would go into the kitchen even less than she does now if she couldn't see the kid. I need sandwiches.

I'm with you on this. I love cooking and find it relaxing. I don't want to hear my wife bitch about her day or hear baby shark for the 1,000th time while doing it.
