Imagine cooking while watching College Football on your 70inch in the living room because there are no walls in the way

primary concern is “We need space for entertaining!”

Which makes perfect sense! When choosing the layout of a house you really should disregard everyday function and opt for what is ideal for the few hours a month you entertain.

I find open plans to be more functional on a daily level as well. I like being able to cook dinner and still interact with my family for example.

But how does not having the open kitchen and whatnot benefit you when you are not entertaining?

That apartment was awesome. I wonder what that space goes for these days.

Been bitching about how ever done the "open floor" concept is. Its become an excuse for shitty, lazy home designs.

Also why are so many people cooking when they have company? 90% of my cooking is done by the time people show up. And when I'm cooking I like my own music, not hearing the tv blaring in the background.

And I HATE having bedrooms right off the living space. Give me a hallway any day.

As mentioned before... I like to cook and my wife likes to hang out on the couch in peace while I do....I like to watch TV after eating and my wife makes a crap ton of noise cleaning.... wall is clutch here.

For entertaining: I like to have watch parties for LSU games.... inevitably most of the people are more interested in a social event than the game. Those interested in the game watch in the living room....those who don't give a frick gather in the kitchen without bothering the game watchers.

Who said you have to be cooking while people are over? Serving is much easier out of an open concept too.

I have an open plan and hallways to all but one bedroom, and even that one is set back off the kitchen with the bathroom "insulating" it.

Ok...but with an open kitchen and living room if someone wants to watch TV and he likes to listen to music those 2 are now competing and blending. I don't know about you but hearing two different audio sources drives me insane.

This is the layout of our first floor of what we are building now. I’m not crazy about the master in front like that but I like it away from the living area

Don't live in a matchbox. It doesn't work in every situation, but I've never had a problem with listening to music in the kitchen while my kid is watching tv.

Depends on where you live. If you're on a busy street with lots of through traffic, that wouldn't be ideal. But otherwise shouldn't be a huge issue.

Wife is pretty crazy about having an "open" concept which works great for entertaining our friends and family but I am more interested in creating an outdoor area near the pool.

If you had friends you'd understand the allure.

and if you have enough friends to have more than one group conversation going on or hosted a football watch party, you get the allure of separate spaces

It doesn't have to be all one or the other... lots of homes have a good blend of open spaces AND insulated spaces.

I agree with what someone said earlier, the wide-open floorplan is lazy designing.

Also a better layout for when company is over, we can hang around the island and or living space without feeling secluded.

You can do this without open floor plan.

We have 2 living areas. One is open to the kitchen where we have a small seating area and a decent sized TV that's almost always on. Really you could basically consider it the same room. This is where we mostly stay when people come over, as I'm usually in the kitchen.

The other living area is totally off on its own which is where the sofas/recliner/main TV is. We hang out here the most when nobody's over, but we don't bring guests into this room unless they're specifically here for a game or movie night or something.

Granted, the house isn't huge or anything. I just love the whole formal and informal living area thing. Especially if someone pops over while there's pillows/blankets all over the couches from hanging out. They'll never see it because that room is not very openly connected to anything else.
