Skip all that Rolex nonsense. Seiko SPB143 for every day
And Grand Seiko for night out

And Grand Seiko for night out

I think the Seikos look very nice, but, if I'm presented with the choice between Swiss automatic movement and Japanese automatic movement, I'm going with Swiss movement all day every day, playa....

Have almost pulled the trigger on a Rolex submariner date recently. Difficult to justify that price tag for a watch I’m going to wear. That and I’ve had a lot of guys say their Rolexes spend a lot of time being repaired. Was looking at Tudor, Ball, Longines, Etc…… Anyone have any opinions? Experience? Talk me into the Sub?
I really struggle with the idea of spending more than 6k to 8k on a watch. Just don’t think I’ll ever pull the trigger on 15k to 20k for something to wear on my wrist. I’d rather have a several watches in the couple to few thousand dollar range. Below is what I would recommend for a nice watch.
Breitling
Omega
Oris
Tudor

Rolexes are classic and timeless.

I went down the watch rabbit hole several years ago. Still haven’t found the one that checks all the boxes. I gravitate towards smaller, lesser known brands such has Monta, Formex, and maybe my favorite Sinn.
And already mentioned the Certina DS action diver, hits way above the price.

I just got a Longines Master Collection moonphase and it's an incredible watch.

The wife bought me an Oris. I think she spent about $3500 on it. I like it but would never spend that on myself. I don’t think I could pay 10 - 15k on one.

Great for ppl who love when others keep trying to glance down at your wrist to see if it’s a Rolex or not

I've been wearing a Hamilton Field Khaki for a couple years. Love it. Wear it daily.
I recently, however, decided to upgrade and bought myself a Longines Heritage Classic 1946 Chrono. This thing is 3x what I paid for the Hamilton, which wasn't terribly expensive by any means but also not cheap either. I had some guilt/buyers remorse after immediately pulling the trigger, but it arrived just this past Monday and after wearing it for a couple days, I absolutely LOVE it and think it was 100% the right decision.
I said all that to say this - get the sub. You will not regret the decision the instant you open the box. Another poster said this and I'll echo it: no other watch will scratch that itch; you'll ALWAYS be thinking "what if" if you get a substitute.
It's an absolutely iconic watch and for good reason. It will not lose any value; not an investment mind you, but the money is simply parked while you decide you want to be its owner.
Do it. You earned it. Your only hesitation it seems is the money, which is understandable, but it's definitely not throwing money away.
Go for it dude. Just let us know which reference once you do.

New money people love Rolexes for the prestige, but they've been passed by other brands both in aesthetics and quality of the timepieces.

Rolexes are classic
Which is why I said 60+ year old men wear them.
ETA: also the better watches are as or more expensive than Rolexes. Has nothing to do with affordability.

Seiko watches are great quality for the money.
Orient makes good stuff that’s affordable too.

Longines has always been an amazing bang for buck option. They make beautiful watches with very good in house movements.
Longines new Hydroconquest model is on a whole new level. May be the best overall value in watches on the market today. Many new options and all are total bangers. I bought one already and will buy at least one more. Most have been sold out since right after launch. My next one will be either “Cookie Monster” or the the gray bezel.
Go check them out for sure.

I bought a Fossil quartz dive-style watch new in the 90s. It had spent most of the last 25 years in a drawer. Last year I put a new battery in it and took it on a snorkel excursion during a cruise. Watertight and accurate.

Cookie monster is stealth flex. Absolute badass watch.

I have a Tag Formula 1 Chrono. It’s nice and wasn’t too expensive. I’ll be purchasing a Tudor Pelagos FXD next. Little more pricey but I like wearing watches on straps.
