This is the problem…..,I want the Sub. Been hung up on the Sub. Seamaster has been my 1a.

The “grew up poor” in me can’t believe I’m even considering spending that much money on a watch…….

To me, the Omega Seamaster is a better-looking watch than the Rolex Submariner.

Maybe the face, but not the strap. I can't stand those Omega straps. But those can be changed out.

I'm on the cusp on buying a vintage Omega. I love them.

OP is obviously about to spend 20K on a watch, so why don't you suggest some for him big baw?

1) 20k is not an entry-level watch for like 99% of the population
2) I asked for more specifics on what he wants out of the watch and haven't received a response yet.

For an actual entry-level luxury watch for a young professional with some disposable income, I'd personally go with an Omega. If he's dead-set on a Rolex for status purposes, get a well-maintained preowned one.

I’ve been considering a Certina DS Action Diver.

Have almost pulled the trigger on a Rolex submariner date recently. Difficult to justify that price tag for a watch I’m going to wear.

There is a dude on the sidewalk across from the Bull on Wall Street that has them for about $75... Cant tell the difference without real close inspection.

That and I’ve had a lot of guys say their Rolexes spend a lot of time being repaired.

My Rolex is 10 yrs old. Never sniffed a repair shop. They are meant to be worn. Not left sitting. If you aren't wearing it, it's best left on a watch winder.

I was the same. Wanted a Rolex my whole life. Bought all kinds of cheaper watches because I didn't want to spend Rolex money.

Got quite emotional when I bought my Rolex and haven't bought another since. No need. I got my dream watch

Guess I was looking for someone to tell me a love story about a watch a third of the price. Guess I’m not gonna get it. Lol

If you've never had a mechanical before the do require maintenance. I really like my Hamilton Khaki Navy. It's not a bad entry point and Hamilton has a cool history. Same parent company as Omega. LINK

Look at Steinart. for about $800, you can have a sub knockoff with better movement than a Rolex.

I am in your same boat. I want to pull the trigger on a nice Rolex or other watch for $15-20K, but I hate parting with my money. I want something more than a Tudor but still classic and traditional.

For some reason Omega does not appeal to me.

Steinhart makes a great sub watch for under 1k.

Look at Oris as well

I own several Hamiltons. Awesome watches.

My daily is a brown leather strap, white face Hamilton Jazzmaster.

.

If I end up with a Seamster or Submariner, they are getting a black rubber strap immediately with a NATO strap to switch it up sometimes. It's a watch meant to be worn for outdoor activities like diving.

I don't like the bracelets on any watch personally. Leather for casual and dress watches.

Have you thought about a Cartier? Nice looking watches - some are moderately priced. I bought one a couple of years ago and am pleased.

BTW: I've had a Rolex for the last 45 years and worn it almost daily. It's been overhauled only twice.

The Submariner is an itch watch. Nothing else quite scratches it. You can argue a lot about other watches, but it is the dive watch archetype. Much like the 911 the design is evolutionary and never revolutionary. I happen to have on a 124060 today and you can look back over 70 years to a 6204 and tell it has the same DNA.

Rolex is not my favorite brand, the sub is not my favorite model, but it really doesn't put a foot wrong. I could opine relentlessly about movements, value retention, service, etc but in the end, if you want a Submariner, if you can you should. A Black Bay, Fifty Fathoms, Planet Ocean, Seamaster, Pelagos, Super Ocean, various Seikos and any other dive watch are just not going to scratch the itch. Once the itch is scratched, if you decide the Submariner is not for you it is an easy flip with higher retained value than most anything else.

This is key. They retain value so damn well.

Stainless steel black dial Sub was my first Rolex. Can't go wrong with a Submariner. Classic.

Omega or Tag are also solid choices.

I'll add Longines to the list - check them out.

You can buy a Glashutte Original SeaQ for the price of a Sub and it's a better watch in every respect. For $2500 you can get what I'm wearing right now, a Muhle Glashutte SAR (different company, both in the town of Glasutte). It's issued to the German Coast Guard and is damn near indestructible. 3000 foot water resistance, the crystal is a quarter inch thick and the movement is specially modified to resist impacts. I've never seen another one in the wild.
