Dude - who the hell are you talking to??
Posted on 5/6/26 at 9:57 pm to Old Character
My first was a Rolex Explorer. Perfect at the time. Nice watch and classic but understated. I still wear it often.
I own two Omegas. One is a Planet Ocean and one is an Aqua Terra. Both have a rubber strap. They are awesome. Casual tool watch that can be worn with gym gear, but you can tell the craftsmanship stands out. They are two watches that are nicely done, solid, and robust.
To me a luxury watch starts with a mechanical movement. I can't buy a brand name "luxury watch" that is battery powered.

Look at Steinart. for about $800, you can have a sub knockoff with better movement than a Rolex.
I apparently skipped the second page of this thread because I missed this gem. Steinhart uses the Sellita SW200 Elabore' (not even the Top) movement in those watches. The SW200 is a copy of the ETA 2824, which is a fine workhorse movement for the money, but near the bottom of the Swiss Made totem pole. Other than price and third-party supply, how is the SW200 better than the 3230/3235 movements in the Submariner? I really want to hear this, be as specific as possible.

For being 'utilitarian', they are very handsome watches on the wrist.
You won't be disappointed.
Also, and honestly this is half the fun, they are strap monsters. I look at different straps for my field watch just as often, if not more, than I browse other watch models. Have a collection of 5 or 6 and they all completely change the look/feel of the entire watch.

I wear a Garmin gps golf watch.
I’d be afraid I’d lose or damage a very expensive watch.

Same here, but the Tag Formula 1 RBR edition. Its a little flashy, but it feels great on the wrist.

Getting "Louis Winthorpe in the pawn shop" vibes

I will repeat what a few have said that if you want a Sub, get it. I wear it all the time, it’s so comfortable for being a hunk of metal. No regrets. I’m also comforted that when I’m gone, it will go to my son, who appreciates mechanical things.
I bought a Tudor Pelagos (matte blue face) a couple of weeks ago. I like it so far.

If you want the Sub, buy the Sub. I received a Rolex as a gift and more recently passed it down to my daughter. I inherited a gold Omega for formal occasions. I typically wear a Tudor Black Bay. Truth be known, I wear my Apple Ultra more than all the others combined!

Not trolling shite. “A lot” may not be accurate as I later stated that my sample size is small.

I found it to be hilarious but not enough to comment on. I have a few watches that use the ETA movement and they are cheap and easy to find parts for. But to compare it to a Rolex movement is laughable. And I'm not a Rolex fan boy. I've never owned one actually. By choice.

Yeah it's not a lot. It's actually very few. Maybe you just happened to hear about a few people with stuff going in for routine service

A watch is a tool.
If you aren’t going to wear it, don’t buy it. I know guys that have Rolex,Tudors, Omegas, Breitlings, etc that wear the shite out of them in some intense fields. Not saying you have to be dumb with it but to me part of the “joy” of a watch, especially one that you’re considering an heirloom, is the watch having some character and stories to tell.
If you aren’t going to wear the watch, don’t buy it. You won’t be happy with it.

I don't have a Rolex or any high end luxury watch but from everything I see and read, unlike other a lot of luxury items, those watches are absolute units and workhorses, meant to be worn.
