New money people love Rolexes for the prestige, but they've been passed by other brands both in aesthetics and quality of the timepieces.

This is what Jack Forster codified as the Second Level of Rolex Appreciation in his famous article "The Rolex Problem: A Semi Rational Look At The World's Most Recognizable Watch" published in Forbes about 15 years ago.

As far as aesthetics go: de gustibus non est disputandum. However, you can't argue their aesthetic isn't the most copied in all of watchdom, for whatever that says.

On the quality side, while many watches have better finissage, Rolex reliability and precision is near impossible to beat in a mechanical watch movement, certainly at the price point.

Obtuse nailed it, as usual. The Submariner is a great watch. It is right at home with whatever lifestyle and occupation you have. Suit, blue jeans, casual, fishing, hunting, business meetings....it is a great do everything watch. I love watches and it is my most worn watch.

If I end up with a Seamster or Submariner, they are getting a black rubber strap immediately with a NATO strap to switch it up sometimes. It's a watch meant to be worn for outdoor activities like diving. I don't like the bracelets on any watch personally. Leather for casual and dress watches.

I just don’t wear — nor understand — “dress watches.” It just never really clicked with me. Watches, to me, are like Jeeps and trucks — not luxury vehicles.

My 43 year old sub has been in the shop once in ten years for service.

If you want entry level, go vintage. I have somewhere around 75 nice vintage watches. 25 in my curio for display. Have less than $5000 invested in that 25, value is around $10k. Most expensive are a 50s Zodiac Moonphase, an Accutron Astronaut with og rally strap, and a 14k Universal Geneve dress watch. Paid less than $2k for all 3, worth around 5k.

Can't go wrong with a Sub or Sub Date. Movements and bracelets are nicer in the new ones, but to my eye, the case proportions are much better on the five digit models. But you need to know what you are doing buying vintage. You won't find a more durable, dependable and widely serviceable watch that will stand the test of time than a Submariner, or for that matter any oyster case Rolex. Also it is essentially currency. You don't have to worry about it taking a big hit in value the first day you wear it and it will keep pace with inflation That's not why I buy watches, but very few brands that can say that (I didn't say no brands, I said very few). If you have the money and it fits your plan, get one and wear the heck out of it, I highly doubt you will be disappointed.

A beautiful dress watch is a work of art. I'll take an 870 pump to the duck blind but a finely engraved Beretta side by side is what I'd hang on my wall.

I have a Tudor Black Bay 58. I also have a vintage 1973 Tudor Prince Oysterdate from my grandfather, so I’m a big fan of the brand.

If I could go back in time, I would not have bought the black bay. I would have bought the Pelagos 39. I love my black bay, but when I bought it, I think I was trying to avoid something that was too “Tudor” so I avoided the Pelagos’s square hour markers. At the time I think I was trying to get a Rolex substitute and that’s why I got the black bay. I’m kind of over Rolex now, though there are a few Rolexes I probably will buy in the future.

My favorite Rolexes are the 36mm Explorer and the gray/black two-tone yellow gold GMT.

I have a sub date and wear it often, looks good with anything even though it’s not a dress watch. I bought my son a Breitling and I almost like it more. Very attractive and super reliable for the price point. I may buy one for myself as a daily wear.

Pretty sure Rolex had to develop lithographic techniques to achieve the level of production precision required of their latest movement.

Hamilton Khaki is my daily wear right now. I still have the stainless bracelet on it, but, about to buy a few straps.

I’d never for myself. My two Tag watches were gifts from my wife. Have a nice black and silver for formal and a Senna I just wear to work and out places.

I've stumbled across a new brand I've never heard of.
Benley Design. They have one that looks like it came from 2001 Space Odyssey. Very odd and cool looking.

I'd never heard of IWC until watching House of Cards.

My sister in law sold the original version of this watch in a Mempis Jewelry store back in the early 70s. $2500

if you like the Sub the Tudor Black bay is a good option. I like the Pelagos better.

there is also the Seiko ProspectX which is even cheaper and looks very similar.

If I'm wearing a suit, I'm not going to wear running shoes...I'm going to wear oxfords. Same as I wouldn't prefer to wear a dive watch with that suit...I'm going to want a dressier watch.

I have plans for like 3 watches to set me up. I currently have a Ball Trainmaster Cleveland Express I've had for years that covers me from casual to business casual and can throw a nicer strap on it to wear with a suit for now. A dive watch like a Seamaster/Sub that I've come close to buying several times and the find some other thing to blow my money on. And eventually want a nicer dedicated watch, like an IWC Portofino, to wear with suits and such.

No you have not. This is comically bad attempt at trolling.

Difficult to justify that price tag for a watch I’m going to wear.

Is it easier to justify the price tag for a watch that will not be worn?

Was looking at Tudor, Ball, Longines, Etc

Tudor has phenomenal value for the price. Since since you hear so many bad things about Rolex you certainly won’t want a Tudor, which is owned by Rolex.

I recommend sticking to Casio.

My dad gave me a stainless Datejust when I graduated high school in 1990. It was my daily wear watch for 15 years. In the time I've owned it, the only time I had it serviced was to replace the crystal. I did also have it cleaned and oiled at that time, but only because I was already getting it worked on, not because I was having any issues.
