re: Do you turn your water main off when going on vacation for a week?

I’ve never done it, but I should. Coworker went on a month-long trip to South America. Some time in that month, his water heater busted. No one knew how to reach him, so water and steam ran out of all doors for a month.
His insurance company totaled the house.

Indoor water switch cut offs for whole houses are features on new homes but if your home is 10 years more older than it probably isn’t gonna have it.

Were they DR Horton or DSLD or something?
The mass produced starter homes seem to have it.
Not having it would be the cheap shitty way of doing it right?

Hell no. The first was an old single shotgun that was around 100 yrs. old in the Lower 9th Ward in 73. The second and third were built in the suburbs and were each about 30 or so years old.
My current home is close to 100 yrs. old and in Mid-City.
None were mass produced cookie cutter homes.

Only when we're going to be gone and the weather is likely to get below freezing. Once we retire, we'll likely do it when we are going to be gone for longer than a week.

We don't but we also have dogs and typically pay someone to come and stay with them at our place while we're gone. It does give a ton of peace of mind having someone to keep an eye on things while we're away.

no...needed for lawn irrigation and autofill pool

In the winter I did, didn't want to take a risk in case there was a bad freeze and I wasn't home.

We have 4 rental houses in Broadmoor and all have easy access water turnoffs and were all built more than a minute ago. I had to talk one of the women that lives in one through cutting her's off during the great SELA Blizzard of 2024. I could swear it was code when we built our camp but I can't be sure. I can't imagine a custom builder not including one, if so it is a seriously odd cost-cutting measure.

They just spontaneously broke loose?
The hose where it was crimped on apparently popped loose.

This seems like an excellent business concept. I guess you could mix in some other clients that just have outside dogs/cats that only need them fed and watered if you are literally staying at a clients house.
On topic, I have a yard in H-town that would be dead without water so don't shut it off but I do in the Winter months.

Had a pipe burst when I was in Africa for a few weeks. Got a huge water bill, come to find out it was a slow leak the month prior and getting bigger. I directed plumbers and leak detection guys over facetime from Morocco.
Never want to get in that mess again...

Yes, I shut my water off at the valve where the water line enters the house when we leave for vacation.
Do you have an issue with sediment in the pipes when you come back? Even if so I guess that inconvenience is minor compared to a burst pipe.

Both were because a shutoff valve to a toilet failed and broke loose.
The hoses are a weak spot. Use stainless steel only. That includes the fittings. Plastic degrades over time. I think they say change them every 5 years if you use plastic?
The absolute best is to have hard piping to the toilet water inlet.

We have well water, never noticed any issue related to turning the water off.
Posted on 10/10/25 at 10:39 am to finchmeister08
Is there a downside to turning off the water for a couple weeks?

I turn mine off ever since my neighbor had a pipe burst upstairs while he was on vacation about 10 years ago.
Posted on 10/10/25 at 12:53 pm to finchmeister08
No but we did come home once to an upstairs sink somehow getting clogged and overflowing while we were out. Fortunately only need to replace floors and it didn't go down.
I still dont because who thinks of that, but yeah shite happens.

I turn my water off and open the braker for the water heater even if just leaving for a weekend. But I license in an old house with shite plumbing.
I remember one time I was gone for like a day and came back to the braided hose on the water heater outlet split and spraying everywhere.

If you decide to do this and you have a tank water heater, I would highly advise you turn off the electricity or gas to the heater. When the water is shut off and the tank keeps getting heated, it can create thermal expansion and you’ll very likely have a leaking water heater when you return.
