re: Road Trip VA to Niagara Falls

Posted by nctiger71 on 4/23/25 at 8:44 am
We live in eastern NC and have made 6 plus road trips up the east coast over the years; anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks long.

This is the route we (two old married couples) took in May of 2021 when we went to Niagara Falls. It's not the way I would go if were primarily interested in NF. We had something to do in DC and then the guys wanted to see Cooperstown.
[/img]

For a road trip from coastal VA to NF I would consider stopping at these places:
- Corning/Watkins Glen NY: The Corning Museum of Glass is a must see, IMO. You will see things that you did not think could be made of glass. There are glass blowing demos and information about the development of fiber optics and all kinds of glass wares. We were there about 1/2 day and had a good lunch in their cafeteria.

- Watkins Glen is about 20 miles north of Corning and sits at the southern end of Lake Seneca. Watkins Glen State Park is there and it is a walk in a canyon along a river. I think it is about a mile long walk/hike in and then back, or you can take a shuttle (was $5 I think) back to the start.

From WG you can drive up the east or west side of Seneca Lake to Geneva and then head west toward Buffalo on Hwy 5 or I 90. The Finger Lakes Welcome Center is in Geneva and I suggest you stop there and get information about the area. They sell products that are made in the area such as wine and sauces. It's worth a stop.

When we left NF we took US 19 south through NY and PA to Somerset, PA. There are a number of sights to see within an easy drive of Somerset.
- Flight 93 National Memorial is 14 miles, 21 minutes
- Fallingwater, an historical home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is 31 miles, 45 minutes
- Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 22 minutes from Fallingwater

- Johnston Flood National Memorial is 32 miles, 35 minutes. It will take about an hour to see the visitor center and watch the video, etc.
- The Allegheny Portage Railroad Nat. Hist. Site is 25 minutes from JFNM. It explains how they got river barges over the mountain from the navigable waters on east to the west.

Before you get to Hershey you might want to check out the dePont family homes in the Brandywine Valley. There are 6+ homes/gardens in the Winterthur, Delaware/Kennett Square, PA area. Longwood Gardens is probably the most notable.

The city of Niagara Falls has suffered an economic downturn over the recent decades and parts of it are run down. The falls are still worth visiting. When we were there in 2021 Canada was locked down due to COVID and we could not go there. None of the activities that we could see on their side were working. I would expect that they would be open now. Take your passport.

I may have done a trip report for the NF trip. I'll post it here if I did.
Where are you staying in Rome?

We returned from a 3 week trip to Sicily & Rome 3 weeks ago today. It was our first trip there. We were in Rome 5 nights.

We did pretty much everything you have on your Rome itinerary and more. My wife wanted to go to Almafi and I had the tour booked but we canceled that and just walked around that day.

We did a lot of walking in Rome; 7 to 9 miles most days. We went in a lot of churches. There are 900+ churches in Rome; we were told. We ate gelato.

In addition to the regular tours one day we hired a guide, a van and a driver (not cheap). There were 4 of us. We went to several of the pilgrimage churches, a Jewish synagogue, ate lunch in a Jewish restaurant cause the guide said it was the most authentic Roman food, and toured one of the catacombs.

Take me to school. What are stumpage fees?
Stumpage is a term that refers to the value of the tree on the stump. It’s the amount the landowner is paid.

Then there are the the costs of harvesting, skidding, and loading on the truck. Then there is the transportation cost to the mill and profit for the logging/hauling contractors.

Add all that up to get the cost of the raw material at the mill.

kids 1,5 and 7,
With kids that age I would look at:
- Myrtle Beach
- Chattanooga
- Callaway Resort & Gardens
A few years ago we stayed at the Double Tree by Hilton on Washington St. It’s about a block and 1/2 to a train station; 1/4 to 1/2 mile walk to Boston Common IIRC. We walked there to start the Freedom Trail.

I think we took an Uber from a restaurant to the ball park but took the train back to the hotel.

Drive along Lake Superior from Duluth to Grand Portage. Get the Guide Along app and buy the Lake Superior North Shore Hwy 61 route.

After we did that we drove across MN and ND to Dickinson, ND to go to Theodore Roosevelt Nat. Park. That’s an unsual NP in that it has a south and a north unit that are about an hour apart - and they are in two different time zones. The south entrance is in Medora and I think there is a lot going on there in the summer. We were there in late Oct and the town had pretty much closed for the season.

From there you can go to Rapid City, SD. There is a lot to do around RC.

Me: 70 Wife: 62

Our reasoning is that if something happens to me, my wife will be eligible for my check amount. I want to make that amount as high as possible.
I took it at 70, wife took the spousal amount at 65 or 66 - whatever age it maxed out for her.

The idea above was one reason. We’re both healthy (as far as we know) and she will likely live into her 90s. I retired at about 65 and lived off savings for 5 years. Another reason for waiting was the market was flat when I retired and waiting to take SS had a built in 7-8% annual growth rate. And future COLAs would be based on larger current payments.

If either of us would have had a serious health issue we would not have waited. But, if making that decision today and given the current US debt amount I’m not sure I would wait. I don’t have as much faith in SS being there now as I did 11 years ago.

Drive up the ice fields parkway to jasper. Lots of amazing sites along the way. Spend the night in Jasper. Visit Jasper NP and lake maligne and others. we enjoyed that area more than the Lake Louise area.
We stayed in Lake Louise and got up early and drove up the Icefield Parkway. We didn't get quite to Jasper as we had to get back to walk on the glacier at the Columbia Icefield.

We had bought the tickets on line and had a timed entry but they told us they would have honored a later time if possible. You get on a regular bus and they take you to a place where you get on the vehicle that goes on the glacier. Then we went to the glass bottom viewing platform.
[/img]
The whole event took about 2 1/2 hours.

Hwy 1A/93 (Bow Valley Pky) parallels Hwy 1 between Banff and Lake Louise (the town). Morant's Curve Viewpoint is just off 1A not too far south of the Ski Resort that is a must see, IMO. Just a great panoramic view. This picture does not do it justice.
[/img]

If you have time take Hwy 1 to Emerald Lake. Go by Takakkaw Falls on the way to EL. It's a little out of the way but worth the time. Also, on that drive stop by the The Spiral Tunnel Viewpoint. They move a lot of goods by train in Canada and the spiral tunnel is how they got over the mountain.
[/img]
It's a tossup to me as to whether Takakkaw Falls (assuming there is glacier melt) and the Morant's Curve view is the single most impressive sight we saw on our trip.

We used Guide Along on this trip but I don't recall if both the Icefield Parkway and the ride to Emeral Lake were on the same purchase or a separate one.
Dan Blocker (Hoss Cartwright from Bonanza) went to school there.
quote:

As a boy, Blocker attended Texas Military Institute. He enrolled in a San Antonio school in 1940. He went to Hardin-Simmons University and Sul Ross State University, where he earned a degree in speech and drama.[3]

In 1946, Blocker played football at Southern Baptist-affiliated Hardin–Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. In 1947, he transferred to Sul Ross State Teacher's College in Alpine, Texas, where he was a star football player, and graduated in 1950. After two years of military service, he earned a master's degree in the dramatic arts.
Probably 2-3 full days in a location drivable from Raleigh. Interested in seeing a new part of America, a new experience.
Virginia Beach or the Outer Banks seem like the most reasonable options.

Where you go depends on what you like to do. I haven't been to VB in many years but my recollection is that it is similar to Myrtle Beach, SC. The NC Outer Banks (OBX) are more houses and fewer putt putt golf, etc., type places.  Nonetheless, there is a lot to do on the OBX besides sitting on the beach; wild horses up north, light houses you can climb, nature trails, fishing, a few museums.

It's about 3 hours from Raleigh to Nags Head which is about the center of the east facing OBX. Between Raleigh and the OBX are some historical towns such as Edenton or Bath that are a little out of the way but worth a visit if you like historical towns.

Turn south at Nags Head to go to Cape Hatteras and you can take a 1 hour ferry trip to Ocracoke Island. You could spend a few days there. There is another ferry from Ocracoke to Cedar Island (2 1/2 hours trip) on the mainland and you can drive to Morehead City, Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle for the south facing OBX.

What about the Shenandoah Valley? Maybe even driving as far as Baltimore.
In the Shenandoah Valley there are numerous historical towns from Bristol, TN/VA to Harpers Ferry, WV. At Abingdon you can do a bike ride down the mountain on the Virginia Creeper trail - it's an old railroad line. Interstate 81 goes up the valley but Hwy 11 does too and it is more interesting, IMO. There are many historical sites in that part of Virginia from T. Jefferson home to Patsy Cline's grave.

I have always wanted to see Rehoboth Beach and Delaware Coast. That may be a bit far,
If you go to Rehoboth Beach you might as well take the Lewes- Cape May Ferry to Cape May, NJ. Wildwood, NJ is near there and it is similar to Myrtle Beach, SC.

but anything worth traveling the coast from Virginia to Delaware?
Getting from Raleigh to Delaware is about 6 hours if you take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel. The road splits the VA/Maryland eastern shore and there is not a road near the beach until Ocean Pines, MD; as there is a road at the NC OBX. Along the way to Delaware and little out of the way is Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore. There are wild horses there too.

On the west side of the Maryland eastern shore is St. Michales which is an historical fishing village.

From Raleigh there are many places to visit within 3 to 5 hours including Raleigh and Durham. About an hour south of Raleigh is Pine Hurst. You can eat lunch overlooking the golf course. Also, see a baseball game in Durham.

If you go to The Breakers get there early and there should be plenty of parking spots. When we left about noon people were circling the lot looking for a space. We went in late July a few years ago.

We also went to Rough Point; Doris Duke’s mansion. It was much less crowded. I asked the staff about Doris killing her interior decorator; don’t think they appreciated that question.

If you get tired of looking at mansions the Lizzie Borden house is about 30 minutes away in Fall River, MA.
Rapid City and Yellowstone road trip 2019
This is a link to a TD trip report for part of your route we did in 2019.

Banff, GNP and other places trip reports. This is a Banff & Glacier NP (plus Vancouver) trip report.

Get the National Park Service app if you don’t have it. It’s the one that looks like an arrowhead with a white buffalo, tree (sequoia I think), and a mountain on it. It has all the sites managed by the NPS, not just the NP.

Teddy Roosevelt NP is a “poor man’s Badlsnds” NP IMO. It has a north & south area that are about an hour apart. Both areas are in and out the same entrance. Medora looks like a cool town but we were there in Oct and it had closed for the season. There is the ND Rodeo Hall of Fame there.

Stop by the TR NP visitor center. They like to talk about prairie dogs.

North of the northern area is Fort Union Trading Post. Kids might like that. The NP app has many historical places similar to that all over the west.
We did Zion in the summer in 2021, IIRC. The road, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, into the main part of the park where the lodge, the narrows, angel landing, etc. are is in and out. When the shuttle is running (Spring, Summer, Fall) cars are not allowed past the visitor center unless you have a lodging or camping reservation.

When the shuttles are not operating I think you can drive to the end of the ZCS Dr. That is where the mile long paved path is that goes to the narrows. There is parking there but not a lot.

There is also parking at the lodge. I don’t know if you have to be staying at the lodge to park there. There are several hikes you can take from the lodge such as to the Emerial pools.

There are also other parts of Zion that in a different area than where ZCS Drive is. North of St George, about 20 miles I think, off of I-5 is the Kolob Canyon Visitor Center. It’s in and out 5 miles and there is hike to a scenic overlook at the end of the road.

Be sure to drive Zion-Mt Carmel Hwy, through the tunnel, to the canyon overlook.

Well packages in cardboard have increased dramatically over the years. I don’t know if this mill was container board but boxes still use paper.

Article says containerboard; that is some type of cardboard box.

Not sure if containerboard includes light weight boxes that food comes in or is just a typical cardboard box.
Key West, Charleston/Savannah,

Maybe southwest Florida; Naples area but don’t know what their situation is after the recent hurricanes.

quote:

It's still going to be kinda cold and shitty, but at least you can party in Savannah.
It’s 70 today in Savannah and forecast to be 78 on 2/9. But it could be cold and rainy the next weekend.

We were in Charleston, Savannah & HH last Oct with friends that had not been to any of those. We drove to Savannah from Charleston for 1 night and went by HH on the way.

IMO, there is no wrong answer but if you have been to Charleston I would check out Savannah & HH.
Canada doesn’t use pennies; they round up or down to the nearest nickle.

That works for me; especially since it cost $.03 to make $.01.
Glacier NP & Banff trip report
This is a link to a trip report from 2023. We flew into Calgary (2 nights there I believe), then two nights on the east side of GNP & two on west then to Lake Louise for 3. Then we drive to Vancouver and flew home from there.
