19 year old shoots Cameron and ends the situation.
Judge reprimands 19 year old instead of calling him a hero.
quote:
The judge admonished Long for carrying the gun and told him he has to think before he acts.
"Fortunately, you weren't injured, but nonetheless, you had a gun there in the first place, which was poor judgment," he said. "And what do you need a gun for protection in a mall, in the first place?
"Nonetheless, I think this agreement is in the best interest of justice."
Long's attorney said that the shooting was a tragic incident and that he conceded to an error in judgment of carrying a concealed weapon.

The backstory:
The shooting happened July 3 at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn. The chaotic scene played out at the mall, leaving three shot, and two dead after a fight escalated and police were called at 1:25 p.m.
The man that Long shot and killed, Cameron Watkins, had gotten into a fight with, and then shot and killed Keonte Seaborn.
Watkins then shot another person during a struggle, and continued to shoot his gun recklessly in the mall before Long acted.
Long fatally shot Watkins, ending the threat, but did not have a concealed carry permit for his weapon.

Your punishment for having a knife when they searched you would be very different from the thief's. For him to have a knife was mere misbehavior, tradition, he didn't know any better. But for you to have one was 'terrorism.

Sucks these are probably state charges. Trump would pardon this asap. Stretchin Gretchen needs to step up here.

Ride the short bus to school judge?

I get it and generally agree, however, the legal age to conceal carry in Michigan in 21. You can open carry at 18, but it doesn't look like that was what he was doing.
He's a hero for ending it, but broke the law in the process (which some would argue, possibly including me, that the action he took was the morally correct path).

I hope that was a rhetorical.

Right? I mean has the judge not seen the average Mall cop?

quote:
As part of his probation, Long must complete cognitive behavioral therapy, not possess any guns or ammunition in that period and take handgun safety classes offered by the court.
The Oak Park man is working towards getting his GED and had no prior criminal record. The judge acknowledged the right to self-defense in the case.
quote:
Under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, if Long completes the probation period without incident, his record will be expunged.
It's a little heavy-handed but I think the deal was about as good as he was going to get. He did the right thing (saving the lives of others), but did it the wrong way (concealed carry without a license in an area where that's required by law).
The judgement means no jail time (it could have been up to 5 years), just probation and (importantly) requires him to take a course which can potentially help him avoid making the same mistake in the future (by showing him the path to getting a CCL).

No good deed goes unpunished.

This is really more on the DA for bringing charges.

Interesting that the original post doesn’t mention that the punishment was 2 years probation. It’s in the article, of course, but not in the post.

Click bait. You purposely left off the word probation in the subject line.

18 (17 with parent’s signature) - You can join the Corps and head over seas to fight and kill for your country. You can lay down your life for your brothers and country. You can get married and start a family. You can vote. But….you can’t drink a beer and you can’t buy a pistol. You can’t obtain a CCL. Make it make sense!

And there it is. The guy is a hero, and the judge should STFU about "why do you need a gun in the mall" (does the mall cop have a gun?), but the ruling does make sense

The judge needs to be sentenced to jail time. As does the prosecutor.
