Mayor LaToya Cantrell wants to turn the French Quarter and other city areas into pedestrian-only zones, the mayor said Wednesday.

quote:

"I call it, "No cars in the Quarter," she said of her idea. "This is the city’s time to reimagine just how we live, how we move about, how we enjoy, and how we get to know and learn the fabric of our city."

She's power-mad. It must kill her that Mitch got to the statues before she had a chance.

I don't have a problem with the way it is now. However, I don't understand the people who want to drive through the quarter either (Unless they live or work there). You can't ban deliveries.... Ultimately, I don't care what she does. I might go to the quarter once a year and I'm certainly not driving.

With that catchy of a name, there's no way this doesn't catch on!

I could see this as a bumper sticker on all sorts of vehicles downtown.

assuming they make exceptions for delivery vehicles, i don't disagree with the idea.

All deliveries will be picked up at a centralized location on Poydras St., and walked into the Quarter.

on the surface, it's not a bad idea...however the devil is in the details...

how do you handle logistics? getting people in and out of hotels?

I have zero issue with this, might be a good idea. I imagine residents and delivery trucks could still get in.

Honestly this would be AWESOME and a lot of tourist cities have gone to this, especially in Europe. I have experienced a few and it is a very enjoyable experience.

The problem would be, of course, parking is a MAJOR issue. You'd have to allow some resident vehicles in, taxis/ubers, etc to certain areas of the FQ, and some additional parking garages nearby would have to be built to accomodate.

Just go to somewhere like Florence and you can see how nice it is.

the FQ roads are too narrow for cars and with all the ubers out these days its unbearable
