Nah, it goes on all day

What is the benefit to not having cars allowed in the FQ?

Lester, ever been to a city tourist area that does this? (and like I have said, most make exceptions for deliveries during certain hours, residents, and taxis to specific locations).

You have no idea what you're talking about...the garbage trucks roll through first...then the beer and liquor trucks roll through all day

dont people actually LIVE in quarter???

As a former resident of the Quarter, I support the basic idea of restricting cars in the Quarter.

At the very least, they ought to forbid people with out-of-state plates from driving in the Quarter. There is no reason on earth Bob & Gladys from Peoria need to be driving down Royal Street at 3 mph....

What if they are staying at the Monteleone or Royal Sonesta? where are they supposed to park?

What if they flew in and got a rental car that happened to have an out of state plate?

This really isn’t a terrible idea, more likely that it would just be terribly executed

It just makes it more enjoyable for tourists. That's about it.

And in other places I have been it is pretty noticeable and very enjoyable. Being able to walk in the streets and such with minimal amount of traffic, noise, honking, etc.

It is nice.

Whether it is feasible in the FQ I don't know. I think it would be.

Friend,

What a great idea. There is no reason to have traffic through the FQ. Usually it is just bumper to bumper. It is a safety hazard and the pollution from it damages our historic buildings. Walking would do wonders for most of the obese whiners if this grand idea passes. It will be hailed by future generations as a turning point in FQ brilliance.

Bring on the masks when indoors and get rid of the gas guzzlers in our historic city centers. I’m not a huge plan of this mayor or her husband, but this is a marvelous idea I support completely.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

So this isn't the WORST idea ever. It has some merit.

A full, forever ban would never work. You could:

1) Allow deliveries between certain hours (maybe 5 am to 3 pm daily, and 5 am to 11 am Saturday/Sunday)

2) Make exceptions for hotels

3) Make exceptions for residents who live in the Quarter

4) Make this happen in a much tighter area. This doesn't need to apply to the entire quarter. Canal to Dauphine to St. Philip to the river ought to be good enough.

5) You would have to improve transit to the "border" and increase parking options outside the border. Like, get rid of parking meters

I'm guessing her task force will deal with these issues.

I lived in the quarter for a while and had a car and I think this is a great idea but the key will be implementation. Would not be a single restriction but rather zones with different hours of access. Something like...

- Streets only pedestrian/bike/transit/emergency vehicles (only a few)
- Streets accessible only by residents (with permit), cab, rideshare, delivery -- full time
- Streets accessible only by residents (with permit), cab, rideshare, delivery -- 12 hrs day, 6am to 6pm weekdays, 6am to 12pm
- fully public accessible streets - 6am to 6 pm weekdays, 6am to 12pm Sunday
