Sounds cool and dumb af at the same time

I'm guessing exceptions will be made for deliveries, staff, and people that live there.

Is a ythi g in the Quarter even open now? And how are restaurants/shops that are open doing with the mask/tracing issues??

-----------------------------------------------------------

It seems that more shops are open than restaurants. I went into a few shops and had takeout from a few restaurants this past weekend. All required masks - none wrote down my name for tracing.

Considering you are turning previously trafficked roads into now walking lanes it will take a lot to get use to. Also, using the European model most of the cities I've been have barriers constructed (that are actually movable for deliveries) that let people know they can't get through.

I have no faith in New Orleans having this, no do I believe they would routinely clean the streets of litter and the homeless like other large European cities do.

So while it sounds nice to have the FQ for walking only, New Orleans and the mayor will find a way to frick it up. I can see it now as they raise taxes for the 3 million they say it will cost for these removable barriers other cities use

I guess the elderly and handicap are fricked.....just make them park a mile or two away to get to their restaurant or hotel. What a great idea

I think he's saying everyone would park in the Marigny.

That's something that needs to be dealt with no matter what happens with the Quarter parking plan.

I have zero issue with this, might be a good idea. I imagine residents and delivery trucks could still get in.

Outside of that, it's not like a ton of people are typically driving through there, other than along the river at Decatur/Peters Street - I'm guessing (hoping?) they aren't looking to shut that off????

In other words, it's a sort of typical pointless gesture.

Chania in Crete, Greece is similar to the French Quarter and is pedestrian only. It was really nice! However, my parents have an apartment in the Quarter and I can't imagine not being able to drive up to it to load and unload luggage, etc.

Cars should already have been banned on certain blocks of Bourbon and Royal for most of the day.

They are and have been for years. There's no real casual thru traffic issue in the rest of the Quarter.

Where? What are the streets that have thru traffic "issues" on a regular basis?

I guess it depends on what you mean by "regular basis" but go down there on a Friday or saturday night and its bumper to bumper throughout large portions of the FQ.

It just makes it more enjoyable for tourists. That's about it.

And in other places I have been it is pretty noticeable and very enjoyable. Being able to walk in the streets and such with minimal amount of traffic, noise, honking, etc.

whats the economic benefit though?

and im just trying to understand what cars are a problem in the quarter.

You really want more pedicabs all over?

The theory is that if the area is more enjoyable, people will stay longer and spend more.

There's also a movement behind it all over the world that isn't really directly focused on the economic benefit but peripheral benefits that can't really be quantified, that I'd basically breakdown to "nicer".

There are whole articles written on it and this has been a trend in major tourist areas for like 30 years now all over the world. I have been to some and it is REALLY nice.

Whether it would work logistically in the FQ I don't know.

But I am not diametrically opposed to the idea if it is done well (which is admittedly doubtful).

Yep, and people who live there. This is what many cities do in their historic areas that have narrow streets.
