A lot more training

They need much more ongoing training. Just as much about how NOT to use their guns as being proficient with their use for example.

We don't need to defund the police we need to upfund them. There needs to be enough QUALITY police officers to rotate off of patrol and train on a consistent basis. In the military, we looked for a 1 to 3 deployment to dwell ratio and when it got down to 1 to 2 it was becoming mission-critical. Proper ongoing training reduces fear, reduced fear reduces mistakes in the field. If you can teach 18/19 not to shoot anything that moves in a foreign country where they don't speak the language cops can be trained well enough to reduce the chances of this type of encounter and ones like Daniel Shaver (also in AZ).

That one's not a good one for the defend the police at all costs crowd. Clearly bad training or bad selectivity with those 2. The shooting cop is obvious, the other saying he would've done the same shows the training is an issue.

Don't see it as criminal though. Both should lose their jobs and at least the shooter should be libel in civil court but I can't judge the shooting officer having committed a crime there. Being bad at your job is not a crime. Human nature and fear win sometimes.

Would you not have gun if you got a knock after 10 PM?

Think this through. If someone is outside your door ready to do harm at 10 at night are they going to knock?

Also, talk through the door or crack it. Who opens the door wide like that? If it is someone you need a gun for they have a clear fricking shot at you.

Not blaming the dude, he was totally murdered but some common sense could have saved his life.

Yep.

What we're seeing is the result of a bottom-tier desired job requiring top-tier life and death responsibilities.

It's kinda crazy we don't have more problems.

This is honestly the best assessment I have seen!

Cops knocked, said Phoenix police very quickly and then backed away from the door out of the view of the peephole. So Whitaker couldn’t see anyone in front of his door.

GF said they had an issue with people knocking on their door and disappearing. So Whitaker looked through peep hole, didn’t see anyone and opened the door.

The automatic immunity for cops as long as they say “ I feared for my life” is bullshite.

Then why didn't the cop the resident was facing shoot him?
If the one in the back, the shooter, saw the gun then he obviously saw that the gun was never up and in most of the video, behind the victims arse while he's beginning his descent into a kneeling position. The gun was never a threat unless the ground was gonna be the victim. No way this shoot will be, or ever should be, considered a "good kill". Not criminal imo(honestly without knowing the full law interpretations or manipulations) but also not "clean" or "good".

As long as the officer can show he had a reasonable fear for his life (which won't be difficult after a jury hears he faced off a homeowner with a gun) he will walk.

Lot to unpack on this. I think the “Phoenix Police” announcement was plenty loud. I do not think the guy knew it was the police though. It is clear to me the guy realized it was the police and was going to his knees, but that is looking at the non shooting police officers camera. The shooting officer had a terrible angle to see what was up, but the guy was already on a knee before he shot. Listening to the 911 calls, the neighbor was clearly lying to her the police there sooner. My thoughts.....not a good shoot, but not criminal, guy should be fired and never allowed to carry a gun again. If the dead guys family got some money from the city I’d be ok with that. I hesitate to say “prosecute” the 911 caller because I wouldn’t want people to be afraid to call 911 in a real domestic situation. If the did prosecute him, I wouldn’t be mad either. Most important thing I learned, never open your door without knowing exactly who is there and why. Had the guy just called out “who is there? I can’t see you” he is still alive. Just a terrible deal all the way around.

It's a very small percentage of cops who are there for the right reasons. Most are white trash that either want to act tough or are too stupid to do anything else
