You could see the "oh shite" look when he realized they really were cops.
If you're going to shoot people for having guns at their home then you may as well make it illegal to have a gun at your home.

This is bullshite. When I was in law school I lived in Sharlo, which isn't a terrible area but tons of break-in's. I had a knock on my door at around 11 PM or so and the first thing I did was grab a bat I kept next to my bed (no gun at the time but would absolutely have grabbed that if I did). By time I got to the door I saw it was a drunk college kid walking away (assuming he was at the wrong house). It is completely reasonable to answer the door armed with a knock on the door late at night.

It's not illegal per se, but it might get you legally killed by a LEO.
