I work a lot and very much enjoy being single.

I always went to a casual place in the afternoon. That way, I didn't have to spend too much on drinks and food if it was a shitty date. If we didn't get along, I'd still have the rest of the night to do whatever I wanted. If they went well, we could continue hanging out after that

that closely resembles how I'd strategize my first dates while attending undergrad at UGA. I'd plan to meet up with the girl around 5pm or so for a drink or two. But I'd also usually have plans to go to the bars with friends that same night.
If things went real well: "Hey, I have plans to meet some friends for dinner, and then we're gonna go downtown. Are you going out tonight? Maybe we can meet back up."
And if they didn't go well?: "Hey, I have plans to meet some friends for dinner. It was great to meet you."

You suck at dating then. Always ways around money learned that in college. Just find cheap things that take time and are fun. Movies. Putt Putt. Picnic at a lake. I dated for years while broke and never had issues
