Who the frick thinks that moving a 180 year old oak tree is a good idea?

It's because they love the tree that they do it. I know a couple that spent 300k to move their "family" tree from Kentucky to Kentfield, California. They recreated their family home in another state, and needed the big oak out front to make it all come together. A nice tree to some is like a viea to others.

Of course South Louisiana McMansionites wouldn't understand this, they haven't ever seen a tree in their neighborhood nor a view.

Don't buy property subject to conservation restrictions and then violate said restrictions. There are always penalties for doing such things.

This wasn't just someone who chopped down a tree on their land.

I usually am all about the freedom, but these were part of a conservation easement and the people who did this are assholes I can smell their entitled attitude from here.

Oh the tax man always wins.

Reminds me of a story where some kids inherited one of the last taxidermied bald eagles from their parents. It’s illegal to sell it. Yet the IRS valued it a frick ton of money and demanded taxes on it. I’ll have to go back and see how that turned out or if I’m way off. But yeah frick the IRS

Edit: Many appraisers valued it at $0 since it couldn’t be sold. IRS comes in and arbitrarily changes valuation several times, finally arriving at a figure of 65 million with 29 million in taxes owed. Turns out the inheritors ended up being able to donate it, but since they already claimed it was worth nothing, they lose out on future federal deductions for the donation. fricking cocksuckers at the irs.

to be fair, they tried to move the tree to a new location near a new house they built. They didn't just chop it down.

The value was because it was actually art, not just a taxidermy. However, it was art they couldnt sell.

There's a joke somewhere in here about HOAs, just wondering if anyone made it in the 4 pages of this thread.

Louisiana fines are not as strict. It resides on a per parish basis. Most heavily populated parishes and cities have greenlaw covenants that protect trees and levy fines for cutting down certain tree specimens without a variance or permit. Fines can be stiff.

I know some developers have had to pay serious money to insured live oaks that were over 100 years old to be removed for a development. Like 250l a piece

Maybe this particular Live Oak was considered Sacred by a local group of Pagans. Those weird people indeed do worship old trees, you know.*

* this is not a Shitpost because they really do worship old trees.

Don't tell us it's not a Shitpost.

It is up to the OTers to decide that.

Nowhere in the article does it explain the details of the conservation easement. There are some assinine valuations for conversation easements, as in millions and millions of dollars in bfe.

Seeing the amount they plan to sell the property for, there's a good chance the $600,000 fine is a pittance relative to the claimed value of the easement.

You want to know how I know that you don't have any trees in your yard?

We lost 20+ trees during the April 27th tornadoes. My neighbor's house was cut in half by a 100+ year old tree. It took my neighbors and I all day to cut our way out of the neighborhood.

I'm not saying I hate trees, but I understand why someone would want them removed. I mean, they relocated the damn thing not cut it down!
