I had a tree that the HOA wouldn't let me cut down so I poisoned it and it's gone now.

The Sonoma County Superior Judge sided with the Sonoma Land Trust, saying the Thompsons knowingly violated the conservation deal and said they demonstrated “arrogance” and “disregard” over the terms of the easement. The fine of $586,000 will go toward environmental restoration on the property.

If these people have the kind of money it takes to move full grown live oaks around their multiple properties in Sonoma I doubt 600k is much of a fine to them.

So much for the 8th Amendment on this one. $586K is a bit excessive.

Not really. Hell they probably spent at least $50k just to move the tree

It really isn't for a tree. Trees are worth a lot of fricking money, especially well established old trees. Do some research on the topic.

Has nothing to do with it being California either, this is true anywhere in the country. Don't frick with trees when they don't belong to you.

How much do you think a 180 year old tree and dozens of others costs to replace? Harvey updyke was hit with 796k in fines, and those trees were an entire century younger.

The same law is in Louisiana. Cut down a live oak on your property and see what happens. It’s something like a $250,000 fine.

I’m gonna need a link on that one

Damn! I have four in my yard that are each about 150-160 years old.

Hope the tax man doesn't decide to start valuing my property on my trees.

Better than you think. They prep the trees long before the actual move. It's isn't a one day process.

This couple obviously had the money to say "fckit" we do what we want to do.

The original owner likely got tax breaks on the property due to the easement. The value of the property was greatly diminished due to the lack of development opportunities. The fine was likely based on recouping some of those lost tax dollars.

Also, I’m not arborist, but I’ve always been told that live oaks branches touch the ground at 200 years old.
