People move trees all the time.

Also, I’m not arborist, but I’ve always been told that live oaks branches touch the ground at 200 years old.

It doesn't take that long. The live oaks throughout LSU were planted mostly in the 1920s and a lot of them have branches on the ground.

I don't know much about moving trees but the success rate of relocating an 180 year old tree can't be very high

Trees are made to be cut down. Why do people care about oak trees so much? No one gives a crap about all the pines that get cut down each year for Christmas.

You can't make an oak hutch without cutting down a few trees.

The contractor that moved the tree should also have his license pulled and be fined for being such a complete moron

Fined? OK. $600,000.00? The land of fruits and nuts!

They had a conservation easement. Assuming that they are the ones who created it, they received a huge tax break from both the state and IRS. But, the flip side to the easement is that there are restrictions on how you use the property.

There is no way in hell that the conservation easement allowed them to tear up and out ancient oak trees.

The fine was for use in restoring the land.

he fine of $586,000 will go toward environmental restoration on the property.

Does that mean they will use the $586,000 to move the trees BACK? Those dumbasses paid to move the trees twice.

To me, there is not many more beautiful backyard settings than to have a natural, wooded area

Exactly. I was noticing my trees in the backyard one day and was like damn, these are some big arse fricking trees. Then looked at all the other houses in the neighborhood and realized I had the tallest trees, and I got like 4 or 5 of them in the backyard. The backyard has good sized shaded parts throughout the whole day. Makes for great grilling in the spring/summer/fall time.

Pretty sure that amount covers legal fees too. So these people bought a piece of property that they knew has this servitude and then tried to ignore it. The article from the local paper adds that the couple basically gave everyone the finger after being put on notice what they were doing violated the covenant.

People need to understand this.

For instance, my sister bought a home built in 1812, for around $600K many years ago. She received $750k in tax credits to do so...

They didn’t the previous owners did it so they knowingly bought the property with it there.

I don’t feel bad for them at all. Arrogant rich couple. I wonder how much they paid to have that tree and the others moved. That’s already ridiculously expensive. And then they all died, every single one. They need to go after whomever they hired because they don’t know what the hell they are doing. I know there are no guarantees but it sounds like everything they did ended up being a bust.
