there are people who are decent pool swimmers who get in open water and freak out. getting punched or kicked in the washing machine is no joke, nor is jumping into cold water (look up "cold water shock"). lots of pool swimmers don't practice sighting either and wind up swimming much more than they need to (for example, going way wide around buoys).
I wasn’t even considering that in my OP. The first 200-300m of an open water swim in any triathlon are nightmare fuel. My first 70.3 I started myself too far back and passed hundreds of people on the swim. 200m in I was thinking frick this, this is the worst thing ever, I’m never doing it again.

Yes. Could do it under the minimum and probably do pretty well. How i would feel the next few days after would be worse than the race itself. People that have done these will tell you, 48 hours after is brutal.

NO!
I did a half about 15 years ago. It took a lot of training and still wore me out. The half ironman was way harder than running a full marathon. The next day I was achin and hurtin so bad I worthless so the extra days would not even help.

Not sure why people seem to be saying the swim would be the hardest part. The most I've swam in open water was like .52 miles in a bayou in Pierre Part. A buddy of mine and I swam from the boat launch to the houseboat (against the current too) on a dare. It took a while (maybe about 30 minutes or so), but was relatively easy to do (and pretty fun as well). I think I could easily do that another <4 times and get to 2.4 miles.
I was driving the chase boat, can confirm all of the above.

Fckk no.
I lift, BJJ and have moderately decent cardio but way to much muscle mass. My endurance simply wouldn't be there.

The barometer for Ironman ignorance starts with:
“I could easily do the bike and the run, it’s the swimming that would get me.”
Little do they know if you actually train, swimming will be the least of your worries
In reality, most people would end up DNF-ing followed by a justification statement something along the lines of “well I would’ve finished if it weren’t for ____”
Most people would crack during the run or the bike.

I think I could do the swim In a day.
The open water swim 2.4 miles currently I swim a mile in about 30 minutes it’s in pool open water would be more challenging and at more than twice the distance it be hard but alternating freestyle and breast stroke I think it could be done in under 4 hours.
You could walk a marathon in a little over 8 hours if you averaged 20 minutes per mile.
Low end average bike speed is 8mph so 14 to 16 hours could get this done. Chafing during the bike portion I think would do me in.

if you can do a mile in a pool in 30 minutes, you could do the swim in under an hour and a half unless you have anxiety about open water. At that pace you would be around people the entire time so it's not like you're off on your own. Sure, you can't see the bottom and even if you don't sight between strokes, doing a breaststroke or two every 10-15 forward crawl strokes with bilateral breathing wouldn't add that much time.
With the time trial starts now and as often as they cancel swims now with any threatening current or waves, the conditions are guaranteed to be nothing worse than "mild".
Even when I did IMFLA in 2015, once we got about 100m off shore, it was choppy but certainly doable.

All the time in the world won’t make a difference when I drown trying the open water swim.

I think you are a little aggressive in your conversion time going from 1 mile in a pool to 2.4 miles in open water. If they are doing 1 mile in 30 minutes, I doubt they are even getting to 2.4 miles in 1 1/2 hours in a pool
Also, when you're doing the open water swim, do you get a diving start? Also, how many times do you get to kick off the wall to give you a little boost in your time?

I did an Olympic tri (about 1/4 of an Ironman) in 2:55 with not a ton of training. Obv an Ironman is much worse but you have 3 days to do it
Considering you can walk a marathon in 8-9 hours and, and a 3 day limit, this is easily doable.
ETA: the biking would hurt bad but could manage if splitting it up over the days. I haven’t been cycling lately

You're assuming that a pool is naturally faster, it isn't. Especially when you consider many IM swims allow swim skins and / or wetsuits or have a current and in an IM swim you're going to have a natural draft off other swimmers.
A 90 minutes IM swim is 2:08 / 100 yds.
A 30 minute mile swim is roughly 1:40 / 100 yards
Simply transitioning from a pool to open water does not result in :30 per 100 yards.

That doesnt boost your time. Sure, maybe the initial dive does for the first 50meters but that washes away very, very quickly. Stopping and restarting at every turn / wall even with flip turns does not save you time.

I rode about 15 miles a couple weeks ago. The next day my taint felt like it had been scrapped with diamond laces sand paper and then kicked by Justin Tucker wearing cowboy boots.
