I mean, 16mph isn't exactly moving on a road bike and flat terrain, but even if you dropped it down to 10mph you could complete it in 11 hours.
And that is if you don’t rest intermittently.

You would likely screw yourself over if you tried to bike straight through.

Mingo is right about that. You try to bike for 11 hours straight and you frick yourself for the run portion.

Break it up into blocks with resting in between and it is very doable.

Have to use one of those thick arse wet suits so you basically float.

its not quite like that, but yes you would get an assist - and for everyone saying no, its not freestyle the entire way, you can one arm side kick and float for breaks on your back.

yes i could do it in 3 days, but id need to be hospitalized afterwards with a variety of ortho issues

FYI, for context on the bike portion:

Looking at google maps (BR). From the bridge to L'Auberge casino via River Road is about 11.5 miles. So you'd have to go there and back five times to get the bike distance. That seems more doable when seeing it on familiar routes.

I'd struggle with the swim but i could do the other 2 in one day and just doggy paddle my way through the swim.

I'd attempt it, and have positive thoughts i could do it.

7am - walk 4 miles. takes a little over an hour.
830am - .8 mile swim. take it easy and do it in an hour, with a buoyant wetsuit.
Eat a little breakfast and take 1.5 hour break.
11am - Get on the bike and ride 40 miles. 8mph would take 5 hours. This would suck, and is without a doubt the hardest part. I'll assume i'm riding in LA where it's flat everywhere. arse is going to hurt the next day.
Eat and take a 3 hour break.
7pm - walk 4 miles.
830pm - eat and recover, in bed by 10pm, up at 6:00am

do it again the next day and the next day.

I could definitely do the run and bike if given 3 days. 1 on each of the first 2 days. The swim would be quite hard, and I don't think I could swim that far without drowning unless I trained for a long time beforehand.

ETA:

Just read the swim is first, sooo I'm dead before I get to even attempt the other two.

If I had a very buoyant wetsuit as someone suggested, I could maybe do the swim, but I'd be so dead tired afterwards.

I cycle and run so I think I could do the other two with a day dedicated to each. But the swim? frick that.

You can’t break it up like that.

It is done in order.

2.4 mile swim

112 mile bike

26.2 mile run

if given a day for each event? depends on the motivation. just to do it, no chance in hell. do it and get $1m probably still no, but i would try

2.4 mile swim - give me an extra buoyant suit, dog paddle and float break, or just kick then float break

go home and eat/sleep

26.2 mile "run" - walking the entire route at a pace of 3m/hr would take 8hr 45m plus rest breaks. could be done

go home and eat/sleep

140.6 mile biking - i believe this is the hill i would literally die on. 10mph would be 14 hours + breaks (1-2+ more hours) i would imagine i would be walking on the side of my bike for a good bit. if up and down hill (like hawaii) no way in hell i make it. i just dont see me making it through this part. give me 3 days on this event...then maybe

Do I have some training time (like a month or two) or do you mean right now?

I’ve done a couple of half IMs and a handful of marathons. I think I could definitely do one in 3 days.

I’ve swam that far, biked that far and ran that far before. Just not all at the same time. It would be pretty, but I think I could do it.

To me, the hardest part to attempt it without training would be the bike. Just the uncomfortableness of it would break most people.

Lets say you remove any cutoffs for any portion, you can slow down on the swim and get more comfortable. You can walk the marathon and it would take longer but it relieves alot of the physical discomfort but it's something very comfortable for a very uncomfortable amount of time.

The bike is a different animal and the pain in the taint after an hour for most people would make them quit, doesn't matter if you're going 18 or 12 mph. The untrained taint is easily defeated.

Mile swim in a pool for a beginner takes about an hour. I'd say in open water just over that.

And congrats after a mile you're almost halfway done with the swim.

A coworker did the California Ironman two weeks ago. His goal was 13hrs but he did it in around 13:30. From mile 11-15 in the run, he started feeling bad and slowed down running. Miles 15-21, his body started to reject everything he tried to eat/drink so he slowed down to a power walk to stop and puke a few times. The media lady with the company he met during the week told him to eat potato chips (food/drink stations along the route), and once he did that he was able to start running again from mile 21-end.

Winner did it in 8 hours vs about 3500ish runners.

Eta: Me do it in 3 days, sure

Me train 8-10 months to do a real one in under 15 hours…You can do anything you put your mind to but na, I aint putting my mind to trying that shite

2 days (assuming the wind isn't horrible on the bike)

5 hours or less for the swim. then bike 60-70 miles in 5 hours - day one
50-60 miles 4 hours bike, then 8 hours to walk 26+miles-

I'd be chaffed, and sore as hell, but yes. 2 days
