Mile swim in a pool for a beginner takes about an hour. I'd say in open water just over that.

FWIW, in my working with scouts I've seen lots of 12-18 year old kids jump in a lake and complete a mile swim without toooo much difficulty. My 15 year old complete the mile swim this summer and had likely swam 4-5 times before he attempted it. It's a difficult, but not that far out of the realm of possibility. The side stroke FTW in that situation.

For the majority of regular people, the swim would be the limiter even thought its by far the easiest of the three legs. You can soft pedal your way through the bike and walk through the run. If you can't swim, you are SOL.

For the majority of “regular people” ie fat and out of shape, their legs and back would be so fricked up from being on a bike that long they physically wouldn’t be able to walk

There is swimming and there is “swimming”.

I can swim, but I’m not a swimmer.

2.4 miles is a good distance. I simply have no reference as I have no history with distance swimming.

Running and cycling, I have history to look at, at least.

Anyone under the age of 50 and in decent shape should be able to do this fairly easily. The swim would likely give people the most trouble, but if you can break it up then it becomes much more doable. 1/2 mile is about 18 laps in a 25 meter pool. Do that 5 times and you've knocked out the swim portion.

112 miles on a bike at a leisurely 16 mph pace would take 7 hours.

If you walk at a decent pace of 3 mph, you could complete the "run" on the third day in a little over 8 hours.

All of these are easily doable with breaks in between.

That was my point earlier.

The time crunch is 72 hours.

If you are even remotely active, it isn’t as insane as people think.

2.4 mile swim

112 mile bike ride

26.2 mile run

I think I could manage that over three days (I am assuming Mingo meant consecutive). Or at least I think I'd have a shot at it.

Not sure why people seem to be saying the swim would be the hardest part. The most I've swam in open water was like .52 miles in a bayou in Pierre Part. A buddy of mine and I swam from the boat launch to the houseboat (against the current too) on a dare. It took a while (maybe about 30 minutes or so), but was relatively easy to do (and pretty fun as well). I think I could easily do that another <4 times and get to 2.4 miles.

For the first time in my life, about 3 or 4 months back, I started running for exercise. I do anywhere from 1-2 miles at night when I run. Takes me 10-15 minutes. I think I could easily do that over the course of a day, especially if the only stipulation was that I completed the totals (rather than having to do them all at once like the regular IM races, for example). I think I could go run for 15 minutes then rest for 15, and do that until I was done.

To me I think the bike would be by far the toughest. 112 miles is a long arse ride. So that's the one I think I would struggle with the most. But I think breaking it up into 37 miles a day seems manageable, or at least attemptable. I also think the biking would cause the most soreness/pain, so I'd do the bike last (unless I broke up each day as mentioned).

Three days is a pretty long time to do something like this. I usually get like 6-7 hours of sleep a night, so if I commit to 6, that leaves me 60 hours to complete the task. So I'm not saying that I would be able to do it, but I do think I "could" do it, at the very least. I'm not in awesome shape or anything, but I am in better shape right now than I have been in prolly 15+ years and I have a good bit of my stamina back. So I think I'd at least have a shot.

Serious question, what is your cycling experience?

I’m not talking to them, I’m talking to the guys like a couple of posts up who says he runs 15 minutes in the evening a couple days a week and thinks it wouldn’t be that hard.

Or the dude who said 16 miles an hour is a “leisurely pace”

In 3 days? Absolutely. Running a marathon next weekend and that won't take me half a day, so I'd have plenty of spare time to bike and swim.

Feel free to address me directly if you'd like to discuss.

ETA: I agree that 16 mph on a bike is nowhere near "leisurely."

Right now no, (coming back from Achillis issue, but for most of my life yes). I have done several halfs.

Have you done one? Thinking about training for one?

Enough cycling for exercise to know that it would be doable with breaks over a three day period.

I sleep an average of 5-6 hours nightly.

Leaves about 60 hrs left to complete the events.

I’ll give myself 3 hours for the swimming (no idea).

10-11 hours for the marathon portion, if I simply walk it.

So, I have a combined total of ~40 hours to complete the cycling.

How is that not doable?

Your 72 hour time period is a massive amount of time.

Drop it to 48 and you have a whole different scenario.

I mean, 16mph isn't exactly moving on a road bike and flat terrain, but even if you dropped it down to 10mph you could complete it in 11 hours.

Scruff, my man...you only need to calculate two sleeps in there. You'd have about 60 hours to do it in.

shite, you are correct.

Even more doable.

Hell, I could rest even longer.
