no way turning over control to someone else and not being able to control who you ride with is better.

You already turn control over to the traffic conditions.

We "bag on it" bc the public transit systems here are complete garbage, and are therefore really only used by "poors" (at least in BR; NOLA is a little different with the street cars). The only people who use public transit here are the ones with no other option. So it's not really "funny" at all. It makes perfect sense, as a matter of perspective.

Its "funny" that Louisiana people equate our public transportation to public transportation in major cities elsewhere.

Some would say its "retarded"

The best commute I ever had ( other than working from home) was a 5 minute walk from my apartment to my office when I lived in Seattle. After a couple of visits there before I took the job I looked at that traffic cluster and decided to move as close to my office as possible. I saved on time, gas ($1.00 more a gallon than in Texas) and most of all my sanity. And a brisk 5 minute walk in a 40f light drizzle will get your blood going too.

MARTA in Atlanta is incredibly useful for me for getting to the airport or downtown for an event. People I know who live and work along the line say it’s so much easier and less stressful for commuting than having to drive in traffic, park, rinse, and repeat. It can get sketchy at night but that’s mostly south of downtown.

Atlanta really needs a medium-distance commuter rail line along the CSX right of way from Cartersville through Marietta south to downtown. It really would not cost an inordinate amount of money - about 10 or so sets of rolling stock, 7 ish station platforms, and moderately updated signaling on the line. The traffic along 75 is out of control.

Public transportation in general has a lot of things working against it. Perception, poor management, unreliability, and safety. All of these things need to be addressed to have any hope of it working. After that, you have to change peoples habits.

Yes it does. That is why I said that I hope Brightline succeeds and other cities copy it. Iy is completely privately owned and operated and designed to service middle class and upper income passengers. It’s a totally different experience from the other mass transit options.

when I was there the tri-rail stopped a mile or so east of the airport(where I worked,) and you had to take a bus into the airport, strong taxi lobby I suppose, wasn't convenient at all, plus leaving a vehicle a the northernmost tri-rail station for a few days wasn't a good idea, I've heard it's vastly improved now

There is a nonstop metromover from the new Miami central train station to the airport. It is like a block or two walk now. Trirail still stops at the amtrak station and it’s a mile away. I used the trirail two years ago in August and I said never again. I live two blocks from the new Miami central station so I decided to try the express and it wasn’t bad. Lot of poors but only a ten minute ride so I can tolerate them for that long.

Europe laughs at this notion because most countries are smaller than Texas or California. Hell France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the UK are all under 0.25 million square miles each. That’s smaller than Texas. Yes public transit works for those major cities in those countries.

It’s much more difficult to make it work in a place as vast as America.

Their promotion with Lyft was f**king genius. I bought a week pass just to try it out and it covers my all my train trips and Lyft rides to my place of employment and back

I was going to complain about the Lyft part but thats tight.

almost worth having to sit in hobo cum.

The train system in Europe is great. Cheap, easy, and not stressful like driving in traffic.

it's awesome, and they have bar cars, and even flight attendants, except they're nice, if you upgrade

I so miss taking the train to work. My day was:
walk to the bus stop, bus to the train station, train stop at my office, reverse on the way home.

When it was nice, I could walk to and from the train station...a little over a mile from my house.

I miss Boston so much!!

My sister used public transportation in L.A. when she first moved out here. Took her 2 1/2 hours to go 30 miles one way.

The Tube in London is clean and really nice, but it sure isn’t cheap.

Unless the train does not pick up and drop off near were you need to leave from and drive too. Lived in the Northeast for years. When it was convenient the train worked. When job changed it was useless to me. Additionally, the amount of tax dollars needed to run a line was ridiculous. Most tax payers were getting hammered and unable to use the service. There is a huge cost to train upkeep that most metro areas are not honest about. Over time the excuse is "we have to do something to keep the investment lucrative." Which is simply throwing bad money after good to hide the mistake. About 7-15% of the population sues something the rest does not, but they are forced to pay for it - basic socialism. It it was a fully private system without tax subsidies it would be outrageously expensive.

You are such a big city snob it’s not even funny. Any time someone talks shite on here about anything having to do with large cities you get your panties in a wad.

I was just talking about the pros of commuting via train. I’ve had a commute of 1 1/2 hours via car and a 20 minute commute via train in my life, so I thought I’d add my perspective on a forum where people post topics for discussion. That’s all.

If anyone seems to have their panties in a wad right now it’s you.
