If you have money, I don't know why anyone young wouldn't want to live there from April through October.

Important part bolded. My uncle used to work for a Louisiana subsidiary of a Chicago based company. Every few weeks he would have to go to meetings at the corporate HQ. In winter he had to dodge chunks of ice falling off the buildings.

ETA every year there's at least one early season Cubs game played in a snowstorm.

I will try to not make this point too strongly, because I get it. I go a little crazy in March but mitigate it by taking a warm weather vacation.

Chicago winters are really not as bad as people make it out to be. November is still nice fall weather. December, the city is alive with holiday stuff. January and February are fine to me because I love the snow and when you go all out (IYKYK) during a Chicago summer you look forward to the hibernating. It's only March and April that really get you.

Are there less permanent offices in the loop compared to pre-covid? Of course.

Is describing it as a ghost town (even comparatively) ridiculous? Absolutely.

I'm down here every day and it is busier than I can remember pre 2020.

Okay, I'm glad you see it that way. My friend and I don't when we're down there.

The office vacancy rate has risen for 11 straight quarters. That's not just a Covid thing at this point, and it doesn't track with it being busier than pre-2020.

I love Chicago. Lived there would do it again.

The Falls are awesome.

I could do without the bitter cold. But doable. What got me was the short day light (4:30pm
Sunsets) and length of winter cold (cabin fever in late March).

That aside, Chicago was a great experience. Alive, music, food, parks, lakeshore drive, miracle mile, Wrigleyville, Jefferson/Lincoln park, Evanston etc.

The short day light is absolutely worse than the cold.

My funny Chicago story..

15 years ago, fresh out of school and we head to Chicago for a wedding. Got a deal on a really nice hotel. We pull up in the rental car and there is a big sign that says VALET- $42. This just a crazy amount of money to me so I look around and see a Self Park sign at the other end of the block. So we unload and I head over to the parking garage. Go over to the kiosk to pay and it was $37.

You'd think people would learn at some point that, even cities with lots of problems are still overall pretty nice and what you are seeing online is algorithmically generated to overstate whichever viewpoint appeals to you.

This is likely true even of places like Kyev right now - a literal warzone.

North of Madison it is fine but south of Madison it is pretty bleak. State Street south of Madison is depressing as shite.

This is correct.

Its a great place to spend a few weekends, go for meetings, whatever.

But if you own large property, have a sizable income, commute daily, have to deal with the city arbitrarily towing your car (there's a song about this), try to get a building permit or open a business... f*** all that. It's terrible. They hold elections in the coldest part of the year on purpose to suppress turnout.

As in any story there are multiple angles.

I have everything I need in Jeff Davis Parish. Who cares about Chicago. I know all I need to know about cities from Fox News.

The reality is that pretty much every big city in America (say, 2-3m+) is enjoyable if you do it correctly and can pretty easily be done safely.

I do think there is the increased sense that you can have a bad/potentially criminal interaction in a "good area" from things like more visible violent crazy people and "teen" takeovers, but the vast majority of people will not experience those things.

But that reality doesn't take away from the fact that many of these cities still suffer from horrific governance and bad ideology that would show itself more forcefully if you had to live/work/own stuff there.

Gotta keep in mind that a gracious plenty folks on these boards think Panama City Beach is an exotic tropical vacation and Gatlinburg is nice in the fall. They are rural folks and scared of their own shadow because they have heard that the big city is scary. A lot of them are uncomfortable in their own home without a loaded pistol handy and the doors locked. Living with irrational fears is no way to live but for this type of fear the only way to overcome is to get out of their comfort zone and they are too scared to do so.

No shite. I worked in Gary Indiana once from early December through mid January. It was miserable. But Chicago is fun that time of year for a visit. Just gotta be prepared and live with it. I wouldn't want to spend many winters anywhere north of Atlanta though....frick that.

And not just by race but by ethnicity and religion. My wife's family is from Chicago and it was kind of shocking to me the first time I was around white folks who hated other white folks because of where their ancestors were from in Europe. I was southern white trash....I didn't know there were different types of white folks....
