When the weather is nice, the energy in the neighborhoods from Lincoln Park down to Hyde Park is unmatched.

what about West Garfield Park, East Garfield Park, Englewood, West Englewood, North Lawndale, Washington Park

Its a major city, like many major cities, if you stay where you belong you should be fine. But also sometimes igonrance is bliss and just because you feel safe doesn't mean you are as safe as you feel

I go to Chicago 4-5 times a year and I love it. Some folks will ask me if I'm scared.

Hell no - I live in Baton Rouge!!!

But I'll follow that with when folks ask me what to do in Baton Rouge I don't tell them about this cool place on Mohican and Wyandot!!

I know where to go, when to go and how to go. I don't go to the worst neighborhoods of Chicago anymore than I'd go to the worst neighborhoods of B.R. And in the 100 times I've been to Chicago I've only maybe twice felt even the slightest bit uneasy and both times just loud bums on the El.

I've felt more uneasy many more times in B.R..

Good areas are terrific, the bad areas are some of the most dangerous in the entire world.

Summer would be great, Winter up there on a daily basis would make me hate everything. If I had to spend an entire Winter there I’d definitely come out a worse person on the other side.

I bet 95%+ of those 719 murders in 2022 were confined to a few specific areas and mostly black male on black male violence.

The stats are updated regularly on HeyJackass.com. Despite the name, the site is SFW and does a very nice job of presenting the statistics on Chicago violent crime in infographic format.

I have been there many times, and much like Europe, you have to recognize the difference between visiting as a tourist and the reality of living there. It is a great place to visit, the museums are very nice (ironically, not nearly as good as the Henry Ford outside of Detroit, another city that is justifiably looked down upon), and the food is among the best restaurant scenes anywhere in the world. I even liked it better than Paris (France, not Texas), but that is admittedly personal taste.

WRT to the city itself though, corruption is rampant, COL and tax burden is ridiculous, and there are many places you do not want to break down or have a flat in while driving on the interstate. If you fly into ORD and never leave that touristy area around Rosemont, you won't see any of this. WRT to murder rate, DFW with about the same population in the MSA has less than half the murders, and San Antonio with 1/3 the population has about 20-25% of the total number of murders.

I almost moved there for a job opportunity that didn't pan out and scoped the area and liked it. Felt safer there than I did in Baton Rouge or New Orleans. I don't know if I could deal with the winters though.

IMO, you hear about how bad Chicago is a lot in conservative media. To some boomer who has never left Ascension Parish, that's the only POV they get.

I live in the Western suburbs of Chicago and it’s the best place I’ve ever lived.

So why the hate?
Haven't been for years. But we used to love walking Michigan Ave. The art galleries were top notch. Bought several paintings there. The kids loved the Lakeshore museums and aquarium ?Grant Park? Everything was accessible ... a major contrast to NYC. Like Detroit, Chicago is/was very segregated. South side of Chicago is Mad Max landscape.

1.) Fees are out of control, even for a big city. The interstate tolls and parking fees are atrocious in particular.

2.) I know all big cities have crime problems to an extent, but the south side of Chicago can be legitimately scary for a random white dude. Maybe it's just me because I had a bad experience there a few years ago (got mugged while getting gas and the guy yelled at me "tha frick you doing here, white boy" while kicking the shite out of me on the ground, I was just stopping for gas passing through).

Like most big cities there’s a segment of the local citizens shitting on the city every day, sometimes literally.

Some of us remember the Chicago that was. I worked there one summer and lived in a safe (that summer) neighborhood near Loyola.
Now I read about the murders there, on streets I walked on daily and back then I felt safe.
