The quality of life you can enjoy in the Chicagoland area is unmatched anywhere else in the country. Now the one problem--and it is a very big problem--is that the property taxes are killer. So you have two main groups of people who shite on it, people who have lived there who are bitter about the property taxes, and people who are so ate up with politics that they can't think straight who are mad it's a blue island in the red heartland.

good move, when I first got hired with my company we were told we were being sent to NYC, a classmate and I went up there on a couple of days off to look for a place to live, the lady who was showing us around rented her garage out to commuters for more than we were getting paid as new hires

Everyone on this site has been to Nola. We all know firsthand what a shithole it is.

Stay in the white areas and Chicago is nice.

You can say that about any place on earth.

he'll have a great time, and he'll always remember that experience, great town, especially for a young, single professional

ETA: my daughter went to college in Chicago and we have family in La Grange, we still get up there fairly often

I too had a great time in Chicago. Stayed on the miracle mile. Walked to a ton of nice places to eat.

Chicago is an awesome city. Everything thinks of the hood when they hear Chicago, which is a small part of the city

Not entirely true

A large swath of the south side is no-go, same for a good chunk of the west side, and pockets of the north side. The east side is Lake Michigan. That said, I firmly believe there is no better Summer City in America....the weather, beaches, lake and water activities, parks, festivals, concerts, and food are amazing. People are largely nice for a big city as well (cuz Midwest). Qualifications; lived there for 20 years, all of it in the Lakeview/Wrigleyville neighborhood.

That said the above can be true at the same time as horrific city/state management and corruption, a tax burden that is among the top in the nation, a high cost of living, a fiscal deficit and spending that will ultimately bankrupt the city and force many of it's contributors to flee (us being two of them), and a crime rate that far exceeds most other cities.

If I was forced to move back north to either Chicago or NYC, it'd be Chicago and it wouldn't take me half a second to make that decision.

I enjoyed Chicago.

It cracks me up when I hear somebody who lives in Nola, BR, or Shreveport say they'd never live in Chicago because of the crime.

It is a badass city. It has hoodrat shite going on like any other big city, you just avoid that area.

My FIL lives about an hour west of downtown. It’s beautiful country out there.

there will be a ton of young women who are doing exactly what he's doing, sort of like Manhattan, nobody who lives there is from there

Not entirely true...Chicago also has some of the highest other taxes as well. Sales tax is 10.25%. Fees and fines are some of the highest in the country. State income tax is 5%. There is a real estate transfer tax that is basically just made up. They have high taxes on things like cell phone plans, a leisure tax (think things like concert tickets), one of the highest gas taxes in the country, a host of sin taxes, and on and on and on. I believe there's a whole new slew of taxes in the budget state dems just rammed through.

ETA: "The 2026 Illinois state budget included more than $800 million in new tax and fee revenue to support its $55.9 billion spending plan." YIKES.

ETA2: The city is CRAWLING with gorgeous young women. The lakefront, Lincoln Park, West Loop...they're everywhere. I was just there last weekend for work...saw first hand.

The people who vote for the loons they keep electing are also great people. Chicago has no graft whatsoever. It is run like a well-oiled machine. I love places that are run by people who would prefer that I die, makes me want to rush there to spend my money.
