Chicago is a great city. Sadly, it has poor leadership, and like any other city, has “no go” areas to stay away from.

Went for a few days/nights w/ family back in 2018. Enjoyed it immensely.

Caught a touring show of Hamilton and a Cubs game. Went to the Art Institute of Chicago (art gallery from Ferris Bueller), Navy Pier.

Ate well.

No issues.

crime and the leadership are why it gets shite on

This is pretty much it.

I've lived in Chicago and the suburbs for most of my life. It has always been corrupt with no-go zones on the west side and south side. The issue lately is that the bad parts have been bleeding into good parts.

City and state leadership has been infiltrated with ideologues who won't prosecute crimes, or let the police do their job, so you see more incidents downtown or on public transit. This has driven away businesses and office occupancy rates are at their lowest ever. My office used to be in the Financial District, and that area is a ghost town during the week compared to what it was pre-2020.

It's still a great major city with lots to do, but many of the criticisms are valid.

Just spent a week in Chicago. We stayed at an AirBnB in Jefferson Park. We drove into the city each day, and thoroughly enjoyed our time. When we were at the AirBnB, we loved the family friendly vibe of the neighborhood. School was still in session, and it was nice seeing so many kids walk to school. Kids were playing outside in the afternoons.

When we were downtown, there was plenty of security. Even the public restrooms were clean. We never felt unsafe or threatened in any way. We spent time at Millennium Park, Hyde Park, the Magnificent Mile, and Navy Pier. Yes, these were touristy areas, but it seems like many neighborhoods in the area are safe with a tremendous amount of things to do.

Were there big city problems? Sure. Traffic was bad everywhere, but multiple public transit options are available. There were some homeless guys around in the city but nothing compared to New Orleans or Atlanta. There are bad neighborhoods to avoid but that’s the case for every city in America.

Almost every time Chicago is posted here, there’s a negative opinion of it. That’s it’s a bankrupt shite hole with corruption at its core.

But it seemed pretty nice for one of the largest cities in the world.

So why the hate?

Believe your own experience and not propaganda. I've lived a lot of places and never want to live anywhere other than here.

The OT has become a boomer board. They have a habit of watching a twitter video of crime in a bad area of Chicago and thinking the entire city is like that.

This board does the same thing with New Orleans. They think everyone who lives in Orleans Parish lives in New Orleans East and is mugged everyday.

Chicago is my 2nd favorite city on earth. If I could spend winters in New Orleans and summer in Chicago I’d be a happy man.

Are there less permanent offices in the loop compared to pre-covid? Of course.

Is describing it as a ghost town (even comparatively) ridiculous? Absolutely.

I'm down here every day and it is busier than I can remember pre 2020.

This has shocked me. I remember State Street going all the way back to the early 80’s, when it was down on its luck (then the really nice rebound in the 90’s under Daley Jr.). The Loop as a whole is much less crowded and busy today. My sister works right next to the Prudential Building and will sometimes send photos to the family and I ask, where is everyone? She just shrugs.

ETA. Though maybe my impressions/memories are faulty. I’m willing to be corrected by someone like keakdasneak who’s there every day.

is that the property taxes are killer.

I did look up the property taxes on our AirBnB. It’s a $500k home in Jefferson Park, and the taxes alone are about $850/month.

from what i hear it's a party town and would be a blast for a young professional. I want to go and catch a cubs game and experience a big city but it does have the Chiraq stigma bc of all the shootings.

And those houses, while nice, are hardly mansions, or even that large in many, many cases.

Yet, and this won't be talked about on Fox News, Chicago is one of the hottest real estate markets in the country right now. 2 bed 2 bath condos listing for 500k and selling for cash offers 100k over listing. Rentals get bidding wars.

The South Loop is insane. I took my wife to Chinatown for a real Chinese dinner for our 20th anniversary this past summer. I’m a madman so I drove us instead of taking the train, and afterwards went up Michigan Avenue from the 20’s. I couldn’t believe the wall of high rises along the Avenue.

$500K isn't getting you a mansion in most places these days

It’s getting you a lot more than the houses in that neighborhood, though, believe me.
