Do you really believe purgatory is real?

I mean seriously.

Not that what I or you believe matters....but I believe that unclean souls can't go directly to heaven but can get there with the help of prayers from those of us here on Earth. I don't think God wants anyone to go to Hell and will give the living and dead many chances to prevent it. There has to be some "holding area" for these souls.

Mark 3:28-29

And Matthew 12:31
Both of these scriptures refer to the "blasphemy of the Holy Spirit". It is generally believed among Bible teaching churches and theologians (as opposed to those who rely equally/greater on church tradition and interpretation from a single source like the Vatican) to be the only sin that is unforgiveable. That would include 1)failing to acknowledge/trust Jesus as God's Son, Saviour of the world, and 2)attributing God's miracles (healing primarily in the first century) to Satan.

My Jewish coworker told me they believe you can only spend 364 days in hell. No matter how awful you are. Purgatory makes way more sense. I didn’t ask her about WW2.

Heaven, hell, purgatory...…….

You do not qualify for heaven, but if enough people beg on your behalf God will eventually relent and let you in?

Man, I'm Catholic, but I aint buying all the bullshite they are selling.

Why?

You willingly joined a club with rules which your son disobeyed preventing him from getting his prize, the priest was simply reminding the others of the rules to remain in the club and get its reward.

If you dont like it quit the club.

In some instances. Grave sin you also have to have the knowledge you are committing a sin. Many suicidal people have lost that ability.

The Preist isn’t wrong that he may not get into heaven but that could be said at almost every funeral.

Catholic theology sucks. Why do you believe it?

This picture below is a joke on illiterate medieval Europeans who wrongly depended on the institution of the Church for salvation. Their ability to understand Scripture was intentionally suppressed so they could never learn. Thank God we finally broke through.

Instead of all of this fabricated non-sense to keep power, all the boy needed have done was believe on Christ who's death covers all sins past, present, and future.
Justification is imputed at once when a person believes in Christ as their substitute. It is not infused like this chart shows. The church does not control the means of justification. The Trinity does.

There are calls for a Catholic priest in the US to be removed after he told the funeral of a teenage boy that he might be blocked from heaven because he committed suicide.
This is pretty terrible to do at a funeral.
Thank you Jesus I ain't Catholic. Proud heretic.

Truth hurts. Perhaps family should have been more aware and proactive in treating the kid.

Do some of y’all run up to kids with Down syndrome and call them fricking retards to their face, and then acted shocked when people are mad at you for simply “telling the truth”?

That's not true. I'd argue those posters like that are far more likely to have downs than be making fun of someone with it. There be some dumb baws on here.

My first thought is that if you wanted a funeral message to be full of positivity why would you have a priest give the message?

quote:

He wondered if he had repented enough to make it to heaven

Sounds very Catholic to me. Surely they weren't truly surprised by the message.

quote:

pretty much calling him a sinner

Again sounds very Catholic to me.

I grew up step-Catholic. frick all that.

As for suicide, I refuse to believe that God would genuinely cast someone into eternal damnation for suicide. It takes severe mental health issues to drive someone into that. They are already living in their own personal Hell. If God is real, he has to be more compassionate than that.

The hard line approach from Christians of any denomination is a prime example of what is wrong with all religions.
