Here is what the priest actually said:

quote:

"I think that we must not call what is bad good, what is wrong right. Because we are Christians, we must say what we know is the truth — that taking your own life is against God who made us and against everyone who loves us," LaCuesta said.

quote:

"Our lives are not our own," he continued. "They are not ours to do with as we please. God gave us life, and we are to be good stewards of that gift for as long as God permits."

"The finality of suicide makes this all the worse," Fr. LaCuesta said. "You cannot make things right again. Neither can Maison. And this is much of the pain of it all. Things are left unresolved, even if it felt to Maison like this was the only way to resolve things."

"You want to turn the clock back and say, 'Please don't give up. We can work through this pain together,'" LaCuesta added. "But now you will have to work through this pain by yourselves, or with those close to you now who will need to lean on you even as you lean on them."

He also talked about the mercy of God and how their son's soul was not necessarily damned to Hell:

quote:

Can God forgive and heal this? Yes, God CAN forgive even the taking of one's own life. ... Although God doesn't dangle his mercy like a carrot, waiting for us to ask for it in order to receive it, we do have to believe in our hearts, express with our words, and show in our actions that it is always there. God wants nothing but our salvation but he will never force himself on us, he will not save us without us. That's how much he loves us. Because of the all-embracing sacrifice of Christ on the cross God can have mercy on any sin. Yes, because of his mercy, God can forgive suicide and heal what has been broken.

Because God is merciful he makes allowance for the spiritual, mental, and emotional despair that leads to suicide. God is able to read the heart, to know the whole truth of a person's life, and thereby to pass sentence with mercy. God knows something we must discipline ourselves to do in these moments — he knows not to judge a person's entire life on the basis of the worst and last choice the person made. God can look at the totality of a human being's life and celebrate all the good that came from it, even while taking seriously the tragic choice that ended everything. And then he shows his mercy and love in ways beyond our limited understanding.

After reading the words of this priest's sermon, I think the parents of this child went a little too far when they said he was up there shitting on their son's memory. He seemed pretty fair and balanced and honest.

No, screw him for being disrespectful to the kid's memory, and to his family on the worst possible day of their lives.

What happened to Christian compassion? It's sanctimonious judgmental BS like this that is driving people away from the Catholic church, and religion generally.

You're not wrong in general, but the Catholic Church doesn't actually teach suicide = hell.

That...doesn't sound bad at all, really.

Worst part I see is the bleak talk about going through grief on your own. It's just a snippet but talking up how you're absolutely not on your own would seem appropriate there.

Is it disrespectful to acknowledge that the kid took his own life? When did the truth become disrespectful to someone's memory?

The priest was compassionate. He actually gave this kid a funeral mass. That doesn't happen often for suicide. In the old days they would have denied this kid a Christian burial by placing his body in the dirt, unceremoniously, at the center of a crossroad in an unmarked grave.

What person would give an organization the power to do that to their loved one and not just go do a funeral outside of the church?

No, the Church teach forgiveness, then refuses to actually forgive. One thing that comes with age is the ability to see things through the lens of time, and I've grown very weary of religious authority of all types presuming to know what is in God's mind. So much harm has come to the world because of this hubris.

Well...during the period in question, if you were Christian then you were Catholic. If you wanted a funeral outside the church, you'd have to go to a Jewish synagogue or an Islamic mosque.

They asked for the priest to speak of the kid's life, not his death. If the priest felt that he could not fulfill that request, then he should have declined. If he said or implied that he would respect that wish, and then chose not to, then he is a liar who has no business leading a religious congregation.

It sounds like he lectured the attendees that their dead son, friend, classmate was selfish. Regardless of your position on suicide, it's absurd to think the eulogy at a teen's funeral is the appropriate place for those opinions.

Tough shite. We don't always get to hear what we want to hear when we are sad or grieving. I had this lesson reinforced on me not too long ago.

quote:

I 100% disagree. While it is the priest's job to provide comfort, it is also his job to tell the truth. I feel like, after reading his words, he did both. The family didn't see it because they were too offended by the truth of what was said during the sermon.

quote:

If he said or implied that he would respect that wish, and then chose not to, then he is a liar who has no business leading a religious congregation.

I agree 100% with you here. So far I haven't read anything that says he agreed to the family's request or not.

I think it's the best place for it, actually. Do you actually care to hear about suicide when you're going about your normal day? I know when we do Suicide Prevention training at my command, I roll my eyes and kind of day dream through it. Who is rolling their eyes and day dreaming at a funeral? Practically no one. That's the best place to talk about the consequences of those left behind.

The moment when the grieving parents asked the priest TWICE to not talk about the boys death.

And you're just a pussy who isn't man enough to face up to the reality that suicide has consequences, both for the person who committed it and for those left behind. I have had a family member and a close friend take their own lives. So please don't presume to think you know me.

Go frick yourself. I've been to two funerals on account of suicide in a little over the last year.

You're a piece of shite, plain and simple.

ETA: It's truly sad that you've been effected by suicide and still have these kinds of thoughts on the situation.

Do you want a cookie or something? I've been in Hawaii for three years and have had four sailors at my command commit suicide in that period of time. I attended two of their memorial services.

What makes me a piece of shite, exactly? Is it wrong to show sympathy for the dead while also acknowledging the fact that suicide is real and that it causes incurable emotional pain for those people left behind?
