Catholic priest criticised teenager who killed himself at his own funeral

There are calls for a Catholic priest in the US to be removed after he told the funeral of a teenage boy that he might be blocked from heaven because he committed suicide.
Jeff Hullibarger and his wife, Linda Hullibarger, from Michigan, chose Father Don LaCuesta to lead their son Maison’s funeral after they met him and trusted him to deliver a compassionate and respectful sermon celebrating “how Maison lived, not how he died”.
The 18-year-old, who tragically took his own life on December 4, was described as a straight-A student and outstanding athlete. But instead, the pastor at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Temperance told the room full of hundreds of mourners and family members what he thought of suicide.
“He was up there condemning our son, pretty much calling him a sinner. He wondered if he had repented enough to make it to heaven. He said ‘suicide’ upwards of six times,” Mr Hullibarger told the Detroit Free Press.

The grieving father even walked to the pulpit and whispered to the priest, “Father, please stop”, but LaCuesta continued on with the critical sermon.
“People told me there was almost a smirk on his face,” Mr Hullibarger told the Detroit Free Press.LINK

Suicide is a grave sin. That priest was doing his job the right way.

How do you kill yourself at your own funeral?

I don’t know how true any of that is, but if I was the father, I would have made that preist swallow his teeth.

True. Could have not said anything at all about the kid going to heaven. But if asked then it is a major sin all Christians believe in.

Does he think there’s a magic number or something?

He probably demanded immediate payment so he could get back to his alterboys

How about for lecturing instead of eulogizing?

”We’re afraid that, like the Catholic Church does, they’ll send him off and he’ll do it to somebody else,” Mr Hullibarger said.
Truer words....it is their demonstrated pattern of behavior

Friend of mine drank, did drugs and partied a lot, but held a good steady job in his youth. He got a form of cancer and died very young. Supposively, on his death bed he accepted Christ.
At his funeral, the priest decided to attack all the guy's friends with his sermon. I thought that was pretty crappy. Maybe if done in a loving way, but this dude was a real jerk-off about it. Sorry for the rant, usually just here for the comedy. Title made me think of that.

I was on my way to the office when I read this and felt the need to respond.
I was raised as a Roman Catholic; did 16 years of Catholic education; and transferred to Iona College in my sophomore year as I thought I may have a vocation and entered the Christian Brothers.
I may not be the best of Catholics nowadays, and I am also convinced if/when I get to Heaven, no one is going to ask me for my "Catholic Card".
I find this priest's actions reprehensible. He is there to give comfort to the grieving family not judge their son. NO ONE on this earth has the right to "play God" and opine who is and who is not going to be saved. I hope that when this man gets to Heaven Jesus welcomes him, but tells him in no uncertain terms that he fricked up giving that sermon.
/rant. I'm off to the office. Have a good day, all.

The church could have refused the parents' request to have the Rite of Christian Burial for their son, but instead they used this opportunity for the priest to humiliate the family and make an arse of himself.
