Cajun Naval Battle - Lawsuits filed!

The lawsuit was filed Friday in the 19th Judicial District Court against United Cajun Navy, as well as the organization’s president, Todd Terrell, and vice-president, Brian Thrasher.
The lawsuit seeks damages authorized under Louisiana law, together with injunctive and declaratory relief, to prevent further defamatory conduct, Cajun Navy 2016 said in an online post.
“The lawsuit does not challenge the work of other disaster relief organizations,” the post said. “Instead, it alleges that repeated false statements about Cajun Navy 2016 crossed the line from protected criticism into defamation.”

I miss when the "cajun navy" was just an informal rag tag group of baws with their aluminum jonboats trying to help neighbors during the storm. Before egos got involved and people started giving themselves ranks of captain, commander, and admiral

I don't know much about any of this, but my limited knowledge is this:
What started out as such a cool thing/idea has now turned into an attention whoring money grab.
How close am I to being accurate? I'm okay with "nailed it" to "not at all" but just don't know where I stand.

Very close. IIRC the whole reason the original NFP was created was just to let people donate to help cover expenses for the guys that showed up to help. Then this other group got involved and there was actual dollars changed hands, etc.
Long way from baws just helping communities in boats.

I don't know much about the Cajun Navy - or the United Cajun Navy (I had no idea there were two separate outfits using the same name) - but I remember during the flood in 2016, that guy who was supposedly in charge of the Cajun Navy lead us on a wild goose chase all night.
He'd post on facebook "Anyone with a boat, we're launching here." We'd show up, and no one would be there. Then another facebook post "We're launching here instead." Show up. No one there. This happened a few times. His last video was after midnight, and he's sitting in his house talking about all the good work he did.
We slept in the truck, and the next morning found a cop who told us where to launch. He jumped on the boat and guided us around.
We did some good that day; pulled a few families out of their flooded houses. Donated all the food and water we brought to a local church that set up a food bank.
But that Cajun Navy guy frustrated the hell out of us.
I suspect, like a lot of charitable organizations, that the rank and file are truly there to help, but the people at the top are grifters.
