I personally go to $2500 and get a used Omega Speedmaster Pro.

And the suggestion about TAG, not a bad value - but the resale value was not true at all. You will lose your shirt if you try to flip it.

I also agree with this. A classic watch that watch nerds love so it holds its value really well.

What do you mean by "best"? At its core a watch is simply just a mechanism used to keep track of time. You can get a $30 Timex that can do just that flawlessly. So I assume you are asking what is a recognizable brand that has good looking watches and performs well mechanically (assuming you are purchasing a mechanical/automatic -- i.e. no battery), right?

1. Style is subjective. What you find attractive may not be attractive to me. For example, I don't particularly like much Tag Heuer styling. But that doesn't mean it isn't a good watch. You may love the way they look.

2. Brand recognition. A $50 watch can do the same thing as a $1,500 watch. I assume you are wanting to spend more because of brand recognition. On that note, Tag is a brand generally inside your price range that is generally well known outside of just watch snobs. Others have higher brand recognition, Rolex, Omega, Breitling, etc, but they are out of your price range.

One brand inside your price range that I like is Frederique Constant. Now, I don't think they are any better functionally than a Tag, Tissot, or even a Seiko or Timex. But I do like their classic styles. Most are simply just homages to other more expensive brands (a LOT of watches are - everyone seems to have a submariner knockoff). You're not likely to "impress" anybody with the brand name (particularly watch snobs), but if you are simply looking for a classically styled swiss watch in your price range I'd at least take a look.

In the end, you are spending a not so insignificant amount of money on a piece of jewelry. So make sure you pick one that YOU like. Not one that you hope EVERYONE ELSE will like.

That’s insane, but I believe most people in these watch threads are terrible at determining their personal style and fall directly back to this.

In my experience watches provide no utility as a tool any more and really only seem to serve to impress other dudes. Why would you drop 1k to impress dudes?

Unless a watch is a stainless steel Patek or Rolex on the dial resell is generally horrible outside of some Panerai and a small handful of other in-demand watches. Most serial watch flippers never buy new and once the resell has made the initial drop it tends to plateau for a lot of watches.

The OP really needs to give us more info. Do you want a mechanical watch or a quartz watch? Do you want a tool watch (like a dive watch for example) or do you want something more dressy. How brand conscious are you? Will you consider used or only want new. There are lots of watch flippers out there and many watches are available used that are barely worn but will come with a steep discount.

One of the best things to do is show us some pictures of watches you like. They don't have to be in the budget range but merely give posters an idea of what you like aesthetically.

Not true. Many Rolex, AP, and Patek's are trading for well above MSRP right now. Some 50% to 70% above MSRP. You can buy one at an AD and then immediately turn around and sell it for a substantial profit.
