Some people get really into the resale market and cycling through watches, playing the market. It's part of the hobby for them I guess.

OP, what style of watch are you looking for? I’ll probably suggest Seiko or Nomos, but guidance would be useful.

Yeah or trading up. On a watch that actually has good resale(Tags dont), some can pretty much maintain an almost retail value. People like having the ability to sell it if money gets tight.

usually stay out of threads meant for the soccer board but you can't go wrong with a Tag Aquaracer(think it replaced the Submariner)

It really depends on what type of watch you're looking for.
In the $1000-$2000 range I'd suggest an Oris Aquis or a Sinn 556A if you're wanting a sport watch, or a Nomos Orion if you want a dress watch.
If you're okay with going up to 3.5k I'd try to find a Tudor Black Bay 58.

If you are looking for a sports watch, consider some of the nicer Seiko divers (SBDC 05x, 06x or 07x) but look hard and you can find for as low as 500+ depending on model and condition. Stepping up to these models gives you sapphire crystal and a quality automatic movement with hand-wind and hacking seconds. If you are looking for something that has a bit more versatility, Seiko SARB0035 or 33 is really hard to beat - a lot of watch for $450. And these readily hold value and are very easy to find a secondary market seller if you get deeper into watches and want to trade. Check out The Urban Gentry on YouTube for some ideas on value affordable well put together watches including microbrands.
When you are talking about TAG, they are not going to hold value if you are buying new and especially if you are paying sales tax. Still if you buy used and want to sell, you are going to have to find a buyer for private sale, and that is no small task for watches of those types of brands - ie not very popular amongst people into watches, and if you trade a TAG on another watch with a gray market dealer, you are definitely going to take a hit. Nothing wrong with the brand per se though.
Point is don't buy a 1-1.5K watch expecting it to hold value. In that range and a little below it the Japan Only (JDM) Seikos (see above)will hold value and are some very good watches. The other sure thing as far as holding value is Rolex stainless steel models and especially SS professional models with box and papers. But the only thing you're picking up there under 5K is going to be older SS DateJusts and SS Oyster Perpetuals, which once you've knocked the depreciation off a new one are pretty much like currency in terms of price stability (ie you bought from a trusted gray market dealer new or used). But, if you are buying used Rolexes, especially vintage, you need to know what you're doing.
