It's not about being superficial. It's about projecting an image of being successful. His belief is that successful people will only deal with other successful people so you have to project that image. The guy makes a lot of money and has multiple businesses here and abroad so I listen to what he says for the most part.

meh, to me it goes back to being superficial, you can lease everything you mentioned, just for show, the people that I know that have made serious, frick you type wealth aren't like at all, whatever works I suppose

He's like that and I know people like you are talking about as well. One of my best friends looks homeless half the time and is self made and very wealthy.
In fairness to my partner he grew up in L.A. so he has definitely been around superficial his whole life but I can also see what he's saying to some degree.

And to your point about being taken seriously and ROI, I'm a believer in tangible and direct benefits over indirect.
As long as you're clean and well groomed enough to look sharp, wear professional clothes like a decent and affordable suit and don't talk like you're an absolute jackass or the world's dumbest moron, you're good to go in whatever professional situation you're in.
Like for example, I always tell people to wear a suit to a job interview with the only caveats being allowed for the general environment it's taking place in.

One of my dad's friends and hunting buddies still uses a flip phone, drives around 2006 chevy silverado and wears short shorts while pushing 60.
And he owns a very successful construction company with his net worth being like 3-5 million.

You can get a new DSSD for about retail is you look, the D-Blue version will have about a $1k premium. I bought mine for 500 under list when they first came out but there weren't many pre-orders like most new stainless Rolex watches since people didn't know how to view a large (44mm) very thick Rolex. The significant taper to the band also caused concern given the bulk of the watch.

Ok then.
For me, watches are a hobby and have been for 30 years. I have bought and sold watches for that entire time and have built up a collection that is worth in the mid-6 figure range and only put in about 5% of that over about 5 years in the beginning.
As for making an impression, there are only a limited number of professions that it makes any difference at all. This diminishes every day as fewer and fewer people wear watches. They really are the last piece of man jewelry that is acceptable to wear. Watches are like any other luxury item it really only makes sense if you wear them for you.

The 6139 Pouge is one if not the coolest Seiko's ever made. Also, a deep rabbit hole if they interest one. Arguably the first automatic chronograph ever. Just the idea of what is and what is not a Pogue is interesting. Plus you have the proof, resist and naked dials. It doesn't hurt that it has space in its bona fides. Just an all-around awesome watch.

I would get a vintage Rolex Air King for around 1800.
I know it’s more than you want to spend, but it’s a beautiful and classic watch. It will hold its value, and it will never go out of style.
It also has ww2 heritage, which is cool.
