Benzodiazepines might be a 'hidden element' of the US' overdose epidemic -- and doctor visits for prescriptions are increasing

Doctors have been increasingly prescribing benzodiazepines, also known as "benzos," in recent years. Looking at data from 2014 to 2016, new research found this class of central nervous system depressants was prescribed at about 65.9 million office-based doctor visits. That's a rate of 27 annual visits per 100 adults.

Women sought these prescriptions more than men and the number of visits increased with age. Nearly half of benzo prescription visits were to a primary care provider. Past studies have shown a growing number of primary care doctors have written these prescriptions.

I’ve been eating Xanax for 20+ years (legitimately). I’ve never once taken more than my prescribed dosage, and I’m down to one 0.25 mg dose per day, which my doctor said is basically placebo at this point.

Just about anything can be abused, medically.

Is is not widely known that people abuse benzo's? I wouldn't call it a "hidden element." People have been abusing Xanax, Valium, klonopin, etc. for a long time

I struggled with benzo addiction. Them alone will not make you OD. What they do is bring the threshold to OD on something else down immensely when mixed together. For example, 25 beers by themselves? You will be hammered but nothing bad but a hangover. 25 beers with a couple Xanax bars, you may die from alcohol poisoning.

shite ain’t hidden. Can’t tell you how many patients come pick up their percocet and xanax together.

Then proceed to bitch when insurance won’t pay for it. Unless you have cancer or a terminal illness, pain meds are supposed to be for short term use only

They kill stress and anxiety so it helps people sleep.

You'll black out if you drink on them. At the same time, you'll wake up actually kinda refreshed instead of violently hungover. I am sure there is some science to It but I figure it's cause you sleep better.
My recommendation is still to never drink on them cause you'll black out very quickly.

People that abuse them became really shitty people. Lived with some bar babies in college, the state of anxiety free makes you a complete jackass because when they really barred out they can't read people or social cues.

The withdrawal from them sucks from what I could tell.

Withdrawal from benzodiazepines is one of the most dangerous of any drug. One of the few that can kill you

I mean they can, but you have to take a shitload of them to actually die from the OD.

This isn't entirely accurate. Certain other substances prevent your body from properly processing the benzos, so you end up with a fatal amount of benzos in your system.

I take it to sleep. Its the only medication that has seem to shut my head down enough to catch 3-5 hours of sleep at night.

No, you'd die from the combination of drugs... not just alcohol poisoning.

Yeah, mixing benzos with other drugs, particularly opioids, is extremely dangerous.

Methadone was a big thing that was abused in the area I grew up in. I can't remember the amount of kids from my school that OD'd mixing methadone and Xanax. A couple of them ended up dead.

Apparently the benzos potentiate (gets you higher) the effects of opioids so people take them together to get more of a kick out of the opioid.

I have a conspiracy theory that like the push for ”pain management” in the 90s spiked the Oxy craze. The current ”mental wellbeing” is the new buzzword for big pharma to push anxiety meds on society.

another killer is when you have another condition like Sleep Apnea and don't wake up when you stop breathing.
