I don't need a smart tv as my dashboard, and I don't need to sync my windshield wipers to my phone through an app. I need a car that will run on gas, windows that roll down by handcrank, a seatbelt, and an airbag. That's it.
Government says NOPE
Federal law requires backup cameras.
Federal law requires better fuel efficiency. So you get things like hybrid vehicles, auto stop/start, active fuel management.
And its not getting better. There is a new law that could require a driver monitoring system in all new vehicles by 2027.

Does the Government say I have to have a smart tv for a dashboard? Does the government say I have to have every function of the car be controlled by a touchscreen? If I want to turn the A/C up, I have to operate an Ipad. Same thing if I want to adjust the radio in any way.
I can't operate my phone while driving or I risk a ticket, but it's just dandy if I take my attention off the road to scroll through a tablet to turn the volume up.
No safety issues there.

two of my 4 vehicles have 200k+ miles and are running good but i have been keeping my eyes open for a new truck at some point.
One thing that pisses me off, probably too much, is when a salesman, within 30 seconds, starts talking about the size of the screen display. Why do dealers think that one of the highlights of a truck is the size of the display? If I wanted a laptop on my dash, I would get a KIA.

So this is average now? This is nuts, no one should finance a car for longer than 60

The high cost of new vehicles isn’t the vehicle itself.
Someone has to pay for that new healthcare deal that the UAW made with the car manufacturers.
Also someone has to pay for the new pay raises that the UAW negotiated with the auto manufacturers.
But on top of all this crap are new vehicles being made with thinner gauges of steel/ aluminum. Plastic oil pans, plastic valve covers, 8 speed transmissions that crap their guts out after 5000 miles, extra charge if you want any paint color other than white. New taillights that cost $800 to replace, $1000 windshields that have sensors in them. SUVs with 2 or 3 batteries. It’s ridiculous.

Can someone tell me how we got away from the early 90s small pickups? A ford ranger or S10 would be perfect. As a dad of a new driver, there's no way in hell I'm spending over 20k for a used vehicle with 100k miles on it. He's driving a 2003 f150. I really wish I had my 95 single cab silverado back.

I'm at 1,459 with zero percent interest and 840 on another with 1.2 percent.
Paid cash for a 3rd but that was a used truck for my son.

Paid off 2019 with less than 40k miles.
Want to keep this sucker for a while. But of course some uninsured illegal could hit me and total my car tomorrow

On a new vehicle, I will do dealer financing during the negotiation process to get the lowest possible price on the car. I don't care what interest rate they come back with because I pay if off within 45 days of pulling off the lot. Going into debt on anything that depreciates is just dumb.

I have a 2017 Sienna and 2016 Outback… all paid for and will plan on keep for next 5-10 years at least

Car dealerships have lost their god damn minds.
None of that is determined by the car dealership. Banks determine the values. Banks and customers determine the rate. Customer determines what they are willing to spend. Dealerships are just wholesalers that service the industry.

I have a 2012 toyota. I’ll drive it to the wheels fall off. Then I’ll put the wheels back on and drive it some more.
This is about where I'm at with my 2011 Accord that's paid off. It's a 2 door and I would love to upgrade to a Civic Sport 4 door Sedan or a Civic Sport 4 door Hatchback for additional room. I'm not even talking about new either, I prefer the previous generation from about 5 - 7 years ago.
But with these prices, forget it. I have 271,000 miles on my Accord. If I do longer road trips now I typically get a rental car. Heck, on my last trip to New Orleans, I did two one way rentals that way I kept the miles off my car (I made stops in Pensacola for the beach for a few hours, Biloxi for one night to go to the casinos and Diamondhead for one night to visit family friends). Plus by doing two one way rentals I didn't have to worry about parking rates in New Orleans, or worse, getting the car jacked up or stolen. But I do this to keep miles off my car.
I'm at the point now, I might even consider rebuilding the engine or transmission if it comes to that before paying current new car or used car prices and rates.

I bet this thread is full of people bragging about how they have a paid off car and anyone paying a note is dumb.

It’s not all cash. It’s 60% MM and 40% split between two ETFs that I keep on a very short string.
Even with taxes I’m at worst breaking even and like liquidity. If my returns begin to tank I can just pull the money and pay it off.
Only other loan is the 5 yrs remaining on my 2.9% mortgage. My kid needed a car so rather than shell out a smalll fortune and have two old cars he’s now driving the 2016 ES and dad got an upgrade.
Win win
